To implement the “2017 University Social Responsibility Practice Plan—Jiali Hsiaolong English Community Care Program," Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology has dispatched its cross-campus English team again to Jiali District. The team visited the Yanping Development Association—which has been famous for sugar production—and Kings Family Textile Company. They were greatly affirmed by local business associations and their representatives. The local businesses are very much willing to have cooperation with the Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology, hoping that the team, with its English revitalization plan, can help develop the local tourism industry and businesses and keep students in place for employment in the local community.

The Jiali Hsiaolong English Community Care Program of STUST is the only team for English community care in the 2017 University Social Responsibility Practice Plan. It gathered English majors from Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology, Tainan University of Technology, Chia Nan University of Pharmacy and Science, and National Tainan University, bolstered by the interdisciplinary support of the Department of Information and Communication, Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology. Accompanied by a photography group for the shooting of all the activities, the team is sure to improve the visibility of bilingual signs and tour guidance in Jiali District.

Zhi-Feng Yao, Director of Yanping Community Development Association of Jiali District and Chief Dingao Village, was very grateful to the visit of the student representatives of English Department. As he pointed out, Yanping Community has been trying its best to rebuild the community in recent years. It won the subsidy from the 2015 Community Reformation Plan by Tainan City Government, as the local sugar culture and rural landscape are very suitable for the tourism industry. Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology was the first university to have a team here to help the community establish a friendly English environment. There were great couplets and propaganda articles with rural features. If English translations and English-language guides can be added, the combination will enable foreign tourists to understand historical and cultural characteristics of the landscape from the days of the Japanese occupation to the present. Surely, this will bring international tourists to the community.

The second stop for the team was to visit the Kings Family Textile Company located on the outskirts of Jiali District, which is very well equipped with facilities and devices very well internationalized with bilingual signage. Mr. Ching-Zhuan Chang is the President of this textile company, which is also the only one in Taiwan that allows the visit of tourists. As Chairman of the Development Association of Jiali District Business Circle, he had been invited to participate in the English Revitalization Forum organized by the end of September this year. He said that the Jiali District is in great need of English translation for business promotion. He also encouraged English majors to join the local employment after graduation, so as to have English rooted in their hometown.
