  Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology is taking the lead of the industry with its AIoT research and development    2017/11/9    

 

AIoT Smart Networking Alliance of Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology held a press conference on November 9 for R & D equipment donation and industry-university cooperation with its three business partners— STMicroelectronics Limited, Unabit Network Co., Ltd., and Jorjin Technologies Inc. The conference was held to implement the recently signed MOU, hoping to integrate the R & D strength of Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology with the innovative service of Internet of Things and artificial intelligence, so as to find more networking opportunities in the future.

Vice President Giuseppe Izzo of Mr. STMicroelectronics, on behalf of all the partners, vowed to continue their donation of IoT related research and development kits for teachers and students for their use in follow-up research and development. Further use can be seen in the future university program and thematic orientation of teaching courses. Chairman Wen-Long Liang of Jorjin Technologies Inc. donated a smart platform for the development of spectacles; he also claimed that the company would cooperate with STUST in smart networking application technology research and development and jointly set up a R & D center for research and development of smart glasses and related consumer electronic products. General Manager Shaun-En Chiu of Unabit Networks announced the launch of its Sigfox base stations in Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology. In the future, teachers and students can rely on the Sigfox base station and Sigfox cloud platform when they have to build up links for artificial intelligence, Internet of Things production, curriculum teaching, research and development of R & D, and senior care field building.

Professor Wan-Rong Chang, Director of the R & D Center of IoT Intelligent Networking, and all the teachers in his team participated in the research and development of wearable smart glasses using STMicroelectronics development platform. The results showed its applications able to enhance the safety of visually impaired people in driving, detect driving fatigue, and assist in the identification of chronic diseases for visually impaired persons. The smart glasses can be employed in diversified applications, such as those that can identify those elders who are at risk of depression. Director Chang said that Jorjin Technologies Inc. and STUST will jointly set up a research and development team and integrate the technology of the research and development center into commercial platform of the company's smart networking application. By connecting Internet of Things by Unabit Network base station and cloud platform, they can quickly cut into the wearable smart glasses consumer electronics market.

In addition, General Manager Chiu and Chairman Liang also shared the excellent results of their research and development in the Asia-Pacific region or in the field of smart glasses. Chiu appreciated the tremendous market potential of Internet of Things in the dilemma of development. Only by providing inexpensive and universal communications services, as he pointed out, can all the 50 billion devices claimed by all the international research companies be connected, and then more Internet of Things Service can possibly go into the lives of people. Yunabit is currently in Taiwan with nearly more than 50 industry cooperation in the development of various types of industrial innovation services. It is hoped that in the future the company will continue to cooperate with STUST to solve various social problems and cut into huge Internet of Things service opportunities. Chairman Liang said that in recent years the company has not only assisted Google in developing smart glasses; they also worked with other smart glasses brands, such as Vuzix, EPSON, Lenovo, and Zuozhen, which have entrusted the company with the development of business dealings and many other companies are even invited the company to ship the whole machine. Chairman Liang mentioned that the purpose of forming a team with Southern Taiwan University Intelligent Wisdom Applied Technology R & D Center is to rapidly cut into the consumer market of the general users who were not covered by this company in the past, hoping to combine STUST’s branch with sensors and algorithms as well as other research and development results and developing for the average consumer use of smart glasses products.

As a technology that combines artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things, AIoT is reshaping the industry value chain of key components, systems assembly, software interfaces, and service design for consumer electronics products.
