School jointly held a multicultural summer camp: a practice of education service in the spirit of Albert Schweitzer

In order to provide education for students with summer school counseling and balanced development of physical and mental development, Teachers Training Center of Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology planned to implement the 2017 Education Services for College Teachers and Students in the spirit Albert Schweitzer by the Ministry of Education.” 13 excellent students from the Teacher Training Center enthusiastically participated in the service team. They served in Shimen Elementary School of Tainan City in the form of a small multicultural summer camp. Director Jin-Chuan Li of Teacher Training Center, Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology, and Principal Fang-Zhu Guo of Shimen Elementary School jointly held the opening ceremony, officially launching a three-week camp activity. The summer camp offered a variety of courses, including mathematics, English teaching, computer and information use, creative painting, dancing, geography, interesting cooking, aboriginal culture appreciation. It was expected that the summer camp activity could enrich the lives of the students in Shimen Elementary School in summer vacation.

The activity was organized by 13 students form the Teacher Training Center. They formed a volunteer team and invited 40 students from Shimen Elementary School to participate in the two classes. Shao-Si Chen was the battalion captain and Chun-Min Lai was the supporting captain. They invited Shing-Yi Lin, Leader of the program in both the 103th academic year and the 104th academic year to share her experience and help younger students facilitate the activities of the camp.

Prof. Jia-Chi Wang, instructor of the team, said that the team of Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology offered school children an integration of Anping early colonial culture and aboriginal culture characteristics, with a wealth of curriculum content and friendly guidance. With this integration of diversified teaching methods, the interaction was greatly enhanced between students of Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology and those of Shimen Elementary School. The activity also enhanced students' interest in learning, supported by counseling students with their physical and mental development. It greatly promoted the selfless spirit of Albert Schweitzer. In addition, the volunteer service team also experienced the mentality with which Albert Schweitzer went to practice medical services in Africa, while they experienced different teaching practice, leaving a good memory for the summer vacation this year.
