The Future University Promotion Program of Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology won the championship and an excellence award of "Corning Founder - Innovative Application Contest."

The works "ROX" and "TDS" by the teams led by Prof. Jin-Bo Shih of the Department of Electronic Engineering, Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology, won the championship and an excellence award of "Corning Founder - Innovative Application Contest" as they outdistanced of 307 entries and nearly a thousand students in the contest.

Taiwan Corning Display Glass Co., Ltd. recently held its third "Corning Star Founder—Innovative Application Contest" to encourage students to explore the problems can be seen in everyday life and find solutions based on the company's special materials, advanced glasses, fiber optics, and ceramics. The purpose was to innovate and create solutions directly aligned with the industry. This contest attracted a total of 44 colleges and universities in Taiwan, with 307 entries by nearly a thousand students to compete for all the awards. The number of participating teams hit a new record high. The contest focused on digital, Internet of Things, wearable devices, consumer electronics and other related products, demonstrating the diverse creativity of new generations of Taiwanese students. Corning is committed to commercialize the winning entries. In the awards ceremony, the company also presented the prototype product based on the winning work last year.

From the Department of Electronic Engineering, supported by the Future University Promotion Program of Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology, Prof. Jin-Bo Shih led his interdisciplinary team—Yi-Mo Lan, Yi-Chuan Hong, Jia-Chuan Liu, and Jia-Chi Chang— to win the championship of the 2017 Corning Founder - Innovative Application Contest and the NT$ 300,000 scholarship. In the boom of gaming, players have performance needs, thus pursuing an immersive sensory experience. ROX, based on two glass materials from the hosting company and optical fiber technology, can effectively enhance gaming efficiency and bring the online gaming experience into a new realm.

Another group work "Three Display Screens" was also directed by Prof. Jin-Bo Shih, which was also designed by an interdisciplinary team—Ren-Kui Hsu, Yi-Kai Fang, Wen-De Chen, and Li-Hsin Yan. They won an excellence award and NT$ 10,000. "TDS" can double the screen size of today's mobile phones, while it is easy to carry as regular mobile phones. This design not only expands the screen, but also enables multi-window operation at the same time. It will bring a reform to the mobile phone industry and welcome by new generations.

Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology has implemented the University Innovation Project Class A--Future University Promotion Program since February 2016 and is now implementing the third phase of the project. In the 105th and 106th academic years, special classmates were enrolled in Electronic engineering, Mechanic Engineering, Information Technology, and Optoelectronic Engineering. Following the model of Oulin Engineering College, "learning while doing" is the key to the program. Practical topics for each semester is the core for a series of courses, emphasizing teamwork and working together and hoping to establish a new generation of technical engineering education model. Undergraduates in the first semester are expected to be able to compete with the industry in innovative competitions have excellent performance. Corning is helping the students to start the commercialization of the winning entries. Class freshman students in the first semester will be able to work in line with industry innovation competition and have excellent performance. The future development is worth waiting.
