Applied English Department, Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology, brought forth the 2014 annual Theatre Showcase "Anne Frank in the Attic” a few days ago. After nearly ten months of actor training and technical production. The performance was given in a small-theater style as the way to interpret the stage play of "The Diary of Anne Frank." In both English and Chinese, the actors presented monologues to show showing both the fear and the hope in the chamber, creating a great scene and atmosphere that moved nearly 300 guests and students.

After four years of school drama performances, Director Hui-Wen Shiao was again invited to take up artistic director, while Prof. Fang-Li Lin still worked with her faculty team as the executive co-ordination and co-executive producer. Thanks to the initiation of "English Drama Program” this year, for the first time there were non-English majors joining the drama department, with four student actors outside the department, including those from the School of Design and those from the Mainland China. The theme of human concerns was carried through time and space, back to the Second World War. Through the actor's emotional and physical movements and with stage design and lighting sound, there revealed harmony between people despite environmental constraints and social conflicts.

Based on the experiences of the English drama performance in the previous 4 years, the team made great efforts to bring all new experience to the audience. In order to create a feeling of constriction in the attic, the technical group worked together to assemble cloths of different colors into a large piece of cloth, so that they could pull it out to cover the audience by the end of the play, thereby bringing upon the audience the feeling of oppression that came from living in an attic. Chairman Prof. Victor Shen said that this year saw a very different performance: "Director Shiao has given us several new faces of drama, bringing professional stage performances into the classroom. I liked the way she put it— Although space could be a limit, it could also be a representation of creativity, a new idea.”
