The Golden Monkey cheerfully celebrated the New Year and brought joy to students
doing multicultural learning: Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology
held the "Welcome the New Year and Spring Activities for International Students”

Chinese Language Centre and the Office of International and Cross-Strait Affairs, Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology, recently held the "Welcome the New Year and Spring Activities for International Students,” a series of activities to introduce the Lunar New Year, including introduction to the Lunar New Year in Taiwan, paper-cut for window grilles, couplets writing, New Year greetings and compliments, lucky money in red envelop, reunion dinner. All these are organized to help the international students in Taiwan to experience the atmosphere of the Lunar New Year.

Teachers in the STUST Chinese Language Center took lead of the activities to make international students understand the origin of the Lunar New Year and learn from the traditional customs in Taiwan. They also taught every student to say great words in greetings and compliments that represent meanings positive for prosperity. In addition, the international students learned in these traditional courses of art how to cut patterns of monkeys and great Chinese words as tokens to symbolize that evil would be dispelled while luck would take its place. While they learned from the beauty of art in Taiwan, they also came to understand the significance of the traditional New Year activities.

At the Reunion luncheon, students from foreign countries also performed songs of their own countries, adding a new appearance to the traditional Lunar New Year. Sounds of firecrackers, window grilles everywhere, together with people’s New Year's greetings to each other—all contributed to the joyful atmosphere in the campus. Director Yong-Peng Wang of the Office of International Affairs said congratulations on behalf of President Tai to all the international students in advance. He also brought each of them a red envelop with luck money in it, a symbol of wealth and good fortune, wishing all the students good luck in the Year of the Monkey and encouraging them to go into the community to experience the Lunar New Year and acquire rich knowledge about such a great feast of Taiwanese culture. International students also said auspicious words about the Lunar New Year to their teachers, showing their gratitude to the teachers for their love and care over the past few years.
