Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology was greatly honored as its
Grassroots Cultural Service Society and Lu-Lai Pragmatism Society was awarded the
highest honor—the National Student Association Award Premium Award—by the Ministry of Education

Grassroots Cultural Service Society of Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology participated in the 2016 College Student Association Society Contest organized by the Ministry of Education and was awarded the highest honor. To promote the progress and development of college student association and to enhance management quality of these activities, the Ministry of Education annually held this nationwide contest and its related demonstration activities for college student organizations. This year, there were 278 student societies and associations from 151 vocational colleges and universities participated in the contest. As a representative of Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology, Grassroots Cultural Service Society participated in the cultural services service category and stood out among the competing teams from 49 colleges and universities. The society won the highest Premium award, as a dazzling result for Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology.

The STUST Grassroots Cultural Service Society was established sixteen years ago. It has been to Miaoli, Taichung, Tainan and Penghu Islands, Pingtung and other remote areas when summer and winter vacations come, holding entertaining as well as educational activities for elementary school children, such as health camps, environmental protection camp, disaster camps, nature camps. During semesters, the society would go to schools in cooperation for educational campaigns.

During the academic years from 2012 to 2015, 17 field camps activities and public service activities were sponsored and organized in association with more than a total of more than 300 volunteers in service, serving up more than 1,000 people. Special activities also include 30 Hour Famine. In addition to active participation in World Vision and activities held by the Uni-President Charity Foundations, its members also actively follow the guidance of the Ministry of Education, devote themselves to service activities for primary and secondary schools in the community, and stay in cooperation with currently a total of 12 partner schools. Every year they would hold 4 activities in education priority areas, serving students in schools located as far as New Taipei City, Taitung, and Pingtung. In addition, the members are also involved in a lot of different social care activities. Working together with the district office of South District, the society co-sponsored the 2015 Tainan Children Summer Camp, more than 150 students from more than 10 elementary schools as participants. At the same time, the society has also been doing service to clean the beach and going to remote regions for educational outreaching activities.

As the chairman of the service society, Shi-Wei Chang said that in return to the hard work during the preparation periods, all the winning moments paid back to us, which are the cumulated results from seniors and everyone in the society. It is greatly hoped that the overall atmosphere of STUST student societies and associations can be better and better. We have to work hard to continue the honor for the society.

Director Yang-Tsu Wang of Student Affairs Student Affairs stressed that there are two most important things for one’s university life—to learn well and to have great fun. In addition to courses for professional knowledge and ability, students should also pay attention to activity planning, leadership and civic competence, and the way they talk and deal with other people. STUST has been actively encouraging development of student societies and yet maintaining the implementation of exit mechanisms. This is to maintain the energy for development and the quality of all of the school-based association service. Under the direction of Wei-Jin Chang, Grassroots Cultural Service Society shows excellent performance every year, with all the members showing strong cohesion and great consensus. It is a model for the student societies and association at STUST.
