Break the ice and begin to sail for the future: Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology,
Southern Taiwan Science Park Administration, and Sumika Technology Co.,Ltd.
began to work together in Japanese industry personnel training cooperation.

In response to nearly more than 200 Japanese companies and other Japanese companies business dealings of the industry in southern Taiwan, there appears to have a great demand for professionals with great Japanese proficiency. Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology set up a Japanese industry personnel training center in 2012 year. As a result of its joint efforts with Sumika Technology Co., Ltd, Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology has selected 15 outstanding students to participate in the training courses. In June 6, President Tai of Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology and the Southern Taiwan Science Park Administration Director Wei-Chen Lin signed Letter of Intent for the Japanese industry personnel training cooperation, symbolizing that they would work together to foster talent.

In terms of the economic, trade, political and civic activities, tourism and other exchanges, Taiwan and Japan are very close and therefore requires a lot of professional talents with Japanese language ability. In southern Taiwan, more than 200 Japanese companies, including the nearly 80 in Tainan and the 170 in Kaohsiung area, not to mention the countless companies in Taiwan industry that are doing business other with Japanese companies. We have great need of manpower in both the long term and the short-term. President Tai of Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology used to be the managing director of the industrial park; he is familiar with Japanese industries and has kept in mind the Japanese personnel training he learned to know. In 2012, the Department of Applied Japanese and the company worked together in planning for a personnel training center and finally setting up the Japanese Industry Personnel Training Center.

When the Japanese industry personnel training center was first set up, it was recognized by Hiroshi Kubota, General Manager of Sumika Technology Co., Ltd, and many other important leaders of Japanese industries. Knowing that personnel training is a long and winding road, they still looked forward to the establishment of this center and hoped that in the future the gap between academia and industry could be bridged. The Japanese industry personnel training centers will make a contribution to south Taiwan, and those in the industry would like to personally act as teachers to teach students the practical experience that they are not given in the classroom.

Sumika Technology Co., Ltd launched a practical action plan to support personnel training. It is the first Japanese company to station in the Southern Taiwan Science Park at the beginning; it also took the leadership in Japanese personnel training, actively helping promote personnel training. The Department of Applied Japanese of Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology selected 15 outstanding students to participate in the training courses. These students would be the first batch of trainees to complete their training by the end of June and began their courses on July 1 Sumika Technology Co., Ltd. Meanwhile, Southern Taiwan Science Park Administration signed with STUST a Letter of Intent for the Japanese industry personnel training cooperation to help manufacturers to participate in the work of personnel training and provide students with internship sites, joint training of personnel required for the Japanese. Southern Taiwan Science Park Administration Director Wei-Chen Lin said that this was a personnel training for the first time for the NSC system, especially when it resulted from government and university cooperation. He hoped to start the ice-breaking and sail for more achievements in the future of Japanese industry in Taiwan.

The students would be involved in training courses first put forward by Sumika Technology Co., Ltd based on its staffing needs in various fields of expertise. Students enrolled through the free interview (approximately 80 students presented their resume) before 15 outstanding students were selected to participate in the training. The students must complete 60 hours for a semester. Of the training courses, 18 hours will be for programming courses, 36-hour for Japanese courses, and 6 hours for workplace ethics. In addition to strengthening the professional skill of the students, the program will offer them basic concepts of Japanese as well as the spirit and ethics in the workplace of Japanese companies, giving them a better understanding, in order to comply with the spirit of the working condition in Japanese companies.
