Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology completed the construction of
its Vitaliving Arch Building and set the record high of having the tallest gate, which has become the next landmark in Tainan.

Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology was founded in 1969. It has ever since then seen several phases of transformation from a college, a technical college, and a university of science and technology; from the initial four departments to the now thriving 4 colleges with 23 departments. The school has expanded from 52,017 square meters to 164,593.84 square meters. With the development of the school, which has expanded from 1 building to the current 32 buildings, the campus has accommodated a total number of staff faculties and students larger than 19,000. In line with the vision, this campus construction aims to meet the needs of many teachers and students in teaching, research, sports and leisure aspects, creating a reasonable, beautiful, and comfortable environment. Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology commissioned internationally renowned Japanese architect Shin Takamatsu to design the building, which complies with green building-related indicators as the main focus of the design. In addition to giving teachers and students a broader, more comfortable space, the building will also be environmentally friendly, able to implement energy-saving concept. With such a unique, innovative and macroscopic properties and perception, the building may become the pride of Southern Taiwan people's memories in the future.

Vitaliving Arch Building takes up an area of 2997.41 square meters, 42.2 meters tall, with a 43-meter-tall gate, which altogether cost NT$ 0.8 billion. The building was designed by Japanese architect Shin Takamatsu. Shin Takamatsu as a professor at Kyoto University, who has enjoyed the reputation of being the "mechanistic master." Its design integrates the construction and the Yiran Kaleidoscopic gate into one, creating a magnificent image of the campus. The column gate carries the feel of a mother embracing the earth, while the arc-type linkage looks like wings flying into the sky. The building shows great concern for all teachers and students of the school in its overall design, promises that the future change can take lead of the development of technical and vocational school system, and enhances the quality and competitiveness of higher technical and vocational education. The exterior of the building poses a wall of triangular cross curtain, meaning that the school heritage and cultural traditions are in line with the scientific and technological development in the future. It is open to the sun, with great windows, energy saving and carbon reducing.

The construction of Vitaliving Arch Building began in 2014 after the groundbreaking ceremony on January 6. In April, 2016, it was finally completed. The pavilion interior atrium courtyard is to pick an empty space that can invite people to look to the sky and feel the wind. There are 10 floors on the ground and 2 basement floors, each floor with its living function and catering facilities: a post office with ATM, bookstores, convenience stores, and other leisure and friendly settings. On the higher floors, offices are set for teaching, research, production, international affairs, and conference purposes . On the first floor, there are 7-11, Mr. computers (APPLE), Starbucks, Cophi Cafe, darts restaurants, speed haircut, DOUBLE A photocopy shop, and other interesting shops. On second floor, there are five gourmet counters, a breakfast bar and a unified drink counters, and a dining area for about 400 people, together with a lounge area for faculties and students. The third floor accommodates classrooms setting to promote hospitality, a square for student life, a bookstore, and the joint service center for students and faculties. Floors 4 to 7 are classrooms for students in class. Basement floors are designated as parking lots for motorcycles and cars. Vitaliving Arch Building appears to be full of creative ingenuity, unique, innovative and macro, based on concepts of environment protection and energy conservation and in conformity to the trend of green building. The interior space planning is pleasant, rich, and ready to serve for living function.

On the other hand, to expand the counseling work on students' employment and push the business of model HKUST plan, Career Center has been added to the building, working together with Research and Development Office, University-Industry Cooperation Office, International School, Language Center, Chinese Language Center, the Department of Pop Music industry, International and Cross-Strait Affairs Office, and many other units. Because this building is located in the entrance area, it is built as a "building that is the main gate." The architect Shin Takamatsu has had the overall planning of the great gate, expecting the building to become the landmark of Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology in its long-term goal.

In addition, to celebrate the completion of the new building, STUST designed a series of merchandise for Vitaliving Arch Building, including flash drives, micro-architectural building blocks, school calendar and classical architecture mugs, ceramic absorbent coasters, pancakes, and environmental backpack. Among them, the miniature Vitaliving Arch Building blocks for the cooperation with the manufacturer’s building blocks manufacturer Tico show the new face of STUST gate. In addition, totems for great buildings, the Six Dormitory, Tzu-An Hall, the lion fountain and Vitaliving Arch Building, and other classic buildings are all great for the sake of memory.
