Electrical Engineering Department of Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology won the greatest excellence award in the 2016 ROC Creative Competition of Biomedical Engineering.
The team from Electrical Engineering Department of Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology, led by Prof. Yi-Chun Du, participated in the biennial 2016 ROC Creative Competition of Biomedical Engineering, which was organized by the Southern Taiwan Science Park and Biomedical Engineering Society. The competition is the most closely watched indicator of student creative competition in the field of medical engineering, which attracts many participants from all the public and private college and universities nationwide. The team led by Prof. Du stood out among the 94 entries in the competition and won the highest honor by their work "Portable Fetal Monitor."

【The team from Electrical Engineering Department of Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology won the highest honor by their work "Portable Fetal Monitor" in the biennial 2016 ROC Creative Competition of Biomedical Engineering.】
"Portable Fetal Monitor” is a synchronous measurement of maternal uterine contractions and fetal heart rate signal. When contractions happen to a pregnant woman, the uterus will begin its pressing action against the head of the fetus, making parasympathetic activity increase the fetus and causing fetal heart rate drop short. Yet, this is not always the case. The team made use of classification mechanism to divide the signal status into four conditions--normality, variability, delayed and late onset deceleration. Among them, delayed and late onset deceleration is quite severe, which is mostly caused when the fetus is in shortage of oxygen and requires immediate medical attention. The team used classification algorithm analysis to instantly display these four conditions. In addition to immediately informing the pregnant women when a dangerous situation happens, the monitor will automatically and immediately call the hospital or her family. Relevant information will also be given to the physician for his or her clinical interpretation and further clinical examination.

Southern Taiwan Science Park and Engineering Medicine and Biology Society invited the winning teams to make presentations in English and show their works at the "Republic of China 2016 International Symposium on Biomedical Engineering (GCBME)," having a face-to-face discussions with scholars interested in their works. In addition to their complete study and concept, the winning team of STUST has also made their work come with great value for commercialization. This award-winning shows that Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology has worked very hard on personnel training in the field of medical engineering. In addition to such positive and solid effort, it also shows that entrepreneurial spirit is highly valued and greatly practiced on the campus.
