The 5th IEEE Global Conference on Consumer Electronics (GCCE 2016): The Internet of Things laboratory R & D team from South Taiwan University of Science and Technology won the Most Outstanding Study in the Achievement Exhibition.
Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology participated in the 5th Global Symposium on Consumer Electronics (GCCE 2016), and the R & D team led by Prof. Wan-Rong Chang won the first prize with their paper “A Wearable-Glasses-based Drowsiness-Fatigue-Detection System for Improving Road Safety” won the First Outstanding Study. The symposium this year received 300 academic papers from over 16 countries and regions. The final 168 papers were accepted by the conference (about 55% of the accepted papers). The authors included academic researchers, personnel and service providers; the symposium shared the concept of consumer electronics, emerging technologies, designs and R & D experiences. It was not easy for Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology to outdistance so many outstanding papers.

The award-winning paper mainly focuses on how to effectively detect driving fatigue tendencies by employing the optical carrier with infrared sensors and identification algorithms. When the results of the paper were published, they also showed that the signal was transmitted to the car infotainment system by Bluetooth when the smart glasses detected driving fatigue. When the car infotainment system received the signal, the driver was driven to remind the driver and able to upload fatigue driving messages, time, and location to the cloud platform via 3G / 4G network. The R & D results can not only reduce the social costs and medical costs incurred by car accidents, but also ensure that drivers can drive safely.

The 5th IEEE Global Conference on Consumer Electronics (GCCE 2016) is an annual international conference sponsored by IEEE Consumer Electronics Society. This is a sister conference of the International Conference on Consumer Electronics (ICCE) in conjunction with CES in Las Vegas, USA. GCCE 2016 will bring together top technical professionals from the consumer electronics industry and academia to exchange information and results of state-of-the-art work on systems, circuits, technologies, processes and applications. Attending GCCE 2016, researchers, system developers, and service providers will be able to share their ideas, designs, and experience in emerging technologies.

In addition to encouraging teachers and students to invest in research and development, as President Tai said, they can also combine the resources and achievements of the exchange and cooperation over the years to expand creativity. The exchange of benefits can also be used to establish cooperation with other international research units or industry relations.
