The Department of Chemical Engineering, Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology held the 2016 National Competition of Research Projects on Chemical Engineering and Materials Engineering for Vocational High Schools. The competition is a special contest first held in 2013, which is financed by the Ministry of Education's Teaching Excellence Program and has entered its fourth year this year. There were 11 high vocational schools participating in the competition, with 19 entries offered by a total of more than 60 instructors and students. It is gradually becoming an important thematic contest for national high school students engaged in chemical engineering. As a result, the competition was won by National Pingtung Engineering Vocation Senior High School, followed by National Cishan Agricultural & Industrial Vocational Senior High School and Chiayi Engineering Vocational Senior High School.

The main purpose of this activity is to encourage students in the chemical engineering department of the whole country to make use of their learned and hands-on experiments and to explore and research on chemical or material-related issues through their teamwork so as to strengthen students' creative innovation and practical ability. As a result of teachers’ guidance and students’ presentation, along with their final report in writing, the process was meant to forge and strengthen students on their chemical and material understanding of the basic principles and problem-solving applications.

Vice President Kun-Chong Li further emphasized the excellent performance of the STUST, saying that the performance of graduates for 8 consecutive years has made STUST the favorite private university for enterprises. The school is committed to practical teaching, industry and university cooperation, talent training and student employment and other teaching effectiveness of the upgrade. It also highlights advanced technology for vocational education and the cultivation of talent to build up links with industry. He expected that in the future STUST can take lead and change the direction of the development of technical and vocational schools, improving the quality and competitiveness of higher technical and vocational education.

【National Pingtung Engineering Vocation Senior High School won the first place by their research project-- "Isochrysis galbana in photo-bioreactor culture applied to high quality rotifer breeding."】

The competition included the preliminary stage and the final stage, with five experts and scholars as the judges for each stage. The first instance is a review on their written reports with focuses on research motivation, method and process, innovation, practicality, expected benefit, and other related items. For the on-site interviews and in-kind exhibitions, the organizers also invited five judges to assess the important contents of their works before the judges asked relevant questions and give scores. The competition process was intense as the students fully demonstrated their competence for practice and oral expression. The final score was the combination of the preliminary review and the final one. As a result, the General Assembly gave the first prize to one team, the second prize to two teams, and the third prize to three, while six teams won prizes for their excellent performances.
