Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology won multiple prizes in the
2016 National College Information Application Service Innovation Competition by the Ministry of Economic Affairs.

Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology participated in the 2016 National College Information Application Service Innovation Competition by the Ministry of Economic Affairs. There were 360 teams with 2,200 teachers and students participating in the competition, which invited 138 experts as judges from the government, industries and academic institutions. Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology, with its "Everywhere Intelligent Helmet" team, won the second prize in Taiwan Delta Special Award and Excellence Awards in the Internet of Things Cross-Strait Application Group and Electronic Information Technology Application Group.

"Everywhere Intelligent Helmet" Team was directed by Prof. Wan-Rong Chang of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Prof. Zong-Yue Tsai of Business Management Department, Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology. Students of the Department of Electronic Engineering—Guo-Hong Bao, Shao-Shing Chao, and Yu-Rui Chong—were responsible for the technical part, while students of Business Management Department—Jin-Ying Chen, Chian-shih Lin, and Ting-Lin Cheng were responsible for marketing part. The work is composed of infrared sensors, camera modules, and microprocessors for the purpose of proactively detecting and reminding the motorcycle rider of any large vehicle close to him or her in the rear. When a large vehicle gets closer, the helmet will immediately notify the rider with its loudspeakers, so that the rider can get far away from it as early as possible keep himself safe. The design can reduce the mortality of riders in traffic accidents. The design, both innovative and practical, has won the second prize in the IOT Cross-Strait Application Group and the Electronic Information Technology Application Group.

Starting from 2004, the Institute of Information Industry of the Republic of China, in conjunction with the Industrial Bureau and the Computer Association of Taipei, has been working on the expansion of competitions focused on information service and innovation. Graduation project is one of the core courses of the college curriculum in the country; it is also an important indicator of the students' graduation achievements. Each year, universities and colleges select teams to participate in the inter-collegial competitions. It is hoped that research and practical experience can be combined as special events are held to increase the opportunities of cooperation between industry and academia, with the aim to meet the needs of the information service industry for innovative energy and talents.

President Chien Tai said, STUST attaches great importance to students’ the graduation projects; theory works only as a framework for a clusters of concepts, while the focus should be on how to effectively apply this concept to solve the problem in order to attain the effectiveness of learning in use. STUST offers a large number of funds for the production of students’ projects; in addition to improving the amount of R & D capacity, it can be integrated with inter-departmental resources for groups of teachers and students to make related technology transfers through the counseling of STUST Incubation Center.
