2017 Thailand Invention Day: Department of Electronic Engineering, Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology, won 2 silver medals.
In the 2017 Thailand Invention Day, the team from Taiwan, led by the Secretary-General Man-Li Shei of World Invention Intellectual Property Associations (WIIPA), won 4 gold medals, 4 silver medals, 1 bronze medal, and 3 special awards, with the 9 inventions they brought to the competition. The results were very impressive, standing out of more than 1,300 works from 21 countries. Teachers and students from the Department of Electronic Engineering, Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology, by their "The air-conditioner by solar cells" and "Multifunction drying device by solar cells," won 2 silver medals and were much favored by many international manufacturers.

The silver medal winner was invented by the team of the Department of Electronic Engineering, directed by Prof. Wen-Jun Chang and other three professors. Their work "The air-conditioner by solar cells" makes good use of solar energy to generate electricity. It also uses air cooling fans—which is made of a water cooling module—to discharge heated air and lower the temperature.

Another silver medal winning project—"Multifunction drying device by solar cells,"— is a solar drying device. In consideration of environmental issues in recent years, which have drawn the attention of all walks of life, the team chose to use solar energy as its power supply to reduce environmental damage and pollution. The components of this device include cooling wafers, fans, hollow shells, solar power supply devices, warning devices, and connecting devices. The hollow shell is filled with a fan, the solar power supply module is arranged on the top of the fan shell, and the absorbed sunlight is converted into electric energy. The connecting components and the power supply device are supplied with fans to blow out the airflow, trying to shorten the time for the clothes to dry up.

The two creative works are quite welcomed by the manufacturers as they both incorporate green elements into their creative whole, show the creative ideas and innovative practical ability of young students in Taiwan. Both were unanimously affirmed by the judges as winners of silver medals. Prof. Wen-Jun Chang of the Department of Electronic Engineering, Science and Technology, Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology, said that both teachers and students have been working hard and actively to show their spirit and creativity in developing different characteristics in their inventions and works, in response to the southward development of Taiwan government. International invention exhibition is an excellent platform for business opportunities and cooperation. The team is greatly encouraged to continue its cooperation with the industry and communicate with each other in promoting patent commercialization and consequently in cultivating students’ innovation and entrepreneurship.
