Technology, won a number of prizes in the 2017 New Generation Design Industrial-Academic Cooperation Project Awards

College of Digital Design, Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology participated in the 2017 New Generation Design Industrial-Academic Cooperation Project Awards, and the work "Between the Fingertips," created by the team directed by Prof. Kun Ouyang of the Department of Creative Product Design and Prof. Tse-Wei Lin from the Department of Biomedical Engineering Department, NCKU, won the Gold Award in Microsoft Group. Meanwhile, a lot of works by students in the College of Digital Design, which were recognized in the "D. Lion" Graduation Project Exhibition, were shortlisted and accredited. 3 works from the teams of the Department of Creative Product Design won three Gold Awards in Industrial- Academic Cooperation Project Awards, and 2 other works also won New Generation Rookie Sponsorship and Special Awards.

The work "Ubag," designed by the five-student team directed by Prof. Jia-Hui Fung, was awarded the gold medal in Yabo Health and Wisdom Life Group. As there are more and more long-term chronic patients with long-term bedridden use of the catheter, most of the problems with urinary tract infection have been left unsolved. The design of "Ubag" mainly employs the IoT intelligent urinary catheter bacteria monitoring system, which makes use of medical clouds to compare the amount of white blood cells in urine to help the elderly to prevent from urinary tract infection and to maintain their health, thereby saving the medical expenses caused by urinary tract infection.

The work "Between the Fingertips," created by the team directed by Prof. Kun Ouyang of the Department of Creative Product Design and Prof. Tse-Wei Lin from the Department of Biomedical Engineering Department, NCKU, won the Gold Award in Microsoft Group. “Between the fingertips” was developed for patients suffering from side brain stroke and doing the rehabilitation with exoskeleton rehabilitation aids (hereinafter referred to as auxiliary gloves). Auxiliary gloves in the application of rehabilitation are commonly used in the mirror treatment, so that the limbs can be stimulated and moved toward self-rehabilitation. Through the means and convenience of visualization, data interface and cloud to read the historical record, users can always know how much progress has been done and which fingers need more strengthen through more practice. Based on the information, users can then, by repeated action to stimulate different body parts, acquire training for the brain to relearn; through the stimulation, users can learn to let the brain slowly control the limb. Stroke patients need manpower to help them do the rehabilitation, due to the length of time it requires. The product hopes to offer early treatment and reduce use of manpower. Through the auxiliary gloves, users can record the progress of rehabilitation, allowing physicians or caregivers to monitor the rehabilitation situation. Moreover, through the interface with the game links, patients can have a sense of self-challenging, have the feel to break records, and have other psychological factors involved—all these can work to enhance the patient's will to acquire training for themselves.

The work “Helpmate,” created by the team directed by Prof. Kun Ouyang, Prof. Ya-Lin Chen and Prof. Yi-Chun Du, won the gold medal of “Jen Pao Group” in the 2017 New Generation Design Industrial-Academic Cooperation Project Awards. The design is developed as a security product to be used in a limited space, where accidents happen most commonly due to lack of oxygen or gas poisoning. These accidents occurred mainly because the complexity of engineering equipment reduces the willingness of workers to wear self-protective devices. The team placed product integration and innovation as the core of their development and design, reduce the wearing devices, and increase the freedom of workers in the sewer activities, thereby enhancing the safety of their work.

In addition, the work “Water Time,” directed by Prof. Wen-Shiong Wang, makes use of gallium low melting point and electric current to create the slow movement of the whole process, resulting in a sense of mysterious beauty beyond expectation. It won the Sponsorship Special Award. The same award also went to the work “Types of Growing,” directed by Prof. Hong-Ming Chen. The New Generation Design Exhibition is the crystallization of the graduation projects by a number of universities and colleges with departments related to design. The Ministry of Economic Affairs of the Ministry of Industry, which established this new mechanism for the establishment of industry and practice links, hopes that through this competition of new generation design for production and cooperation project, students can have an early understanding of the workplace profile, the market demand, technology and workplace environment, and other related industry knowledge. The purpose is to eliminate the gap between different schools and offer training that helps design students understand the industry practice.
