The UBag production team of the Department of Innovative Product Design, Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology, won the German IF Design Talent Award. Directed by Prof. Jia-Hui Feng, the team included Yu-Tzi Yang, Bo-Shuan Hong, Hon-Jen Tsai, Si-Yun Wang and Shin-Yu Zhang.

"UBag Intelligent Music Bag" addresses the global issues of aging and stems from the data of many diseases. Based on their interviews with doctors and long-term caregivers, the team members found that urinary tract infections (UTI) are often the most commonly found source of infection in hospitals and that about 90% of the reported cases are closely linked to long-term indwelling catheters. Patients in the process of hospitalization is placed in the catheter. This happens especially to long-term indwelling catheter patients in the intensive care unit, long-term care centers or home care: every day there is a chance of urinary tract infection. Urinary tract infection is often complicated by pyelonephritis, cystitis, and bacteremia, not only increasing the mortality rate of patients, but also resulting in more extended hospitalization as well as an increase in medical expenses and costs.

From the medical interviews, the team learned to know whether most home care cases with long-term retention of the catheter for the elderly have urinary tract infection problems. Owing to the deterioration of body functions on the part of the elderly, urinary tract infection symptoms are not easy for family members to detect. Sometimes the elderly may only become more prone to lethargy. When abnormalities are found, often the number of white blood cells have already been tens of thousands, and sepsis may happen as a result. In most clinical practice, medical measures will not be taken before urinary tract infection is confirmed. It must take three days to carry out bacterial culture and determine what bacteria is the cause before the use of antibiotics. For the elderly, their bodies may be greatly harmed, and the subsequent follow-up medical expenses are quite high.

In May, 2017, "UBag Intelligent Music Bag" won the gold medal in a new generation industry design competition; in July, 2017, in another competition--"The New Wave Comes—Teacher-Student Group Designer Exhibition." They received great compliment by President Tsai, who mentioned on her facebook, "I was impressed by IoT device designed to prevent urinary tract infection from happening. The students have not received complete medical training, but they felt it incredible when their relatives and friends reluctantly said that urinary tract infection is a normal phenomenon happening in use of urinary tracts. That was why they designed a new product to improve the situation."

As Prof. Jia-Hui Feng said this work has been filed for patent application No. 106115990 and the product of the new patent pouch device 106208239. The UBag team designed an IoT networking system that sends photographic lens shots of urine to Medical Cloud to facilitate a measurement of the number of white blood cells in the urine. When the number of white blood cells reaches the level where the medical staff determine the need for prevention, reminders of caution will be immediately sent to the family and health care center. Subsequent measures will be taken to help the elderly prevent from urinary tract infection. As a result, the health of the elderly can be well maintained and medical expenses due to urinary tract infections can be saved. Therefore, the team hopes to employ this product concept to achieve the purpose of preventing urinary tract infection from happening. Through the APP and by the caregiver self-monitoring of urine status, the clinic can ask the physician to assess whether the early replacement of the pipeline (UTI).
