The 2017 Taipei International Invention & Technology Trade Show was held at the Taipei World Trade Center from September 28th to 30th. There were over 600 inventors and units from 23 countries participating in the show this year, bringing together more than 1,500 patented products and technological inventions. It was expected to attract nearly 60,000 domestic and foreign buyers and the public in three days. Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology participated in the invention of the competition and, as a result, won two platinum gold medals, four gold medals, two silver medals, and three bronze medals.

The work that won the highest honor—Platinum Award—was "Off-needle and Leak Detection Device" by Prof. Yi-Chun Du of the Department of Electrical Engineering and his team, which carries an array of sensing patches with mapping circuit combined with wireless transmission, which patients can wear to detect any off-needle and leak and which therefore can be applied to multiple beds. When any leakage develops into critical conditions, the device will issue warning sounds and lights; through Bluetooth wireless transmission, the information can be sent to the medical station or an APP, so that nurses will immediately take appropriate treatment. The product has acquired three patents at home and abroad. In February, 2017, the device passed the clinical animal test and IRB human test in the National Institute of Animal Experimental Center, Kaohsiung Rongmin General Hospital and its Tainan Branch. From the dialysis test on 500 patients, no adverse reactions and measurements were found against its 100% accuracy. It is hoped that the safety of patients should be improved by means of the devices proposed in this study, which will improve the safety of clinical renal dialysis and improve the safety of clinical patients.

The work "Automobile Control Switch” developed by Prof. Jer-Jia Sheu of the Department of Mechanical Engineering also won a platinum medal. The work proposes a new body design to solve the problems that cause constraints to the joystick mode of operation; at the same time it can integrate the locking mechanism, the knob locking device, the two-stage faucet mechanism, the adjustable faucet lock, and the standby power supply unit. In addition to effectively saving the car space, it can also increase the multi-functional features. What is even more important is that it can simplify the user mode of operation and increase the future lock or key-free system expansion to meet of demand domestic and foreign locomotives, electric cars, beach cars, and many other systems that require more secure and convenient conditions in use, especially for locomotive hands-free system. The product has also been technologically transferred to domestic manufacturers, not only to be sold to the domestic market but also to be manufactured and distributed to countries in accordance with the New Southbound Policy, such as Vietnam.

President Chien Tai of Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology said STUST has been the best business partner of industries, with its focus on long-term, heavy investment in all kinds of sophisticated research and development equipment and resources. It has also accumulated patents and R & D results by years, encouraged teachers and students to participate in international competitions, and strengthened fundamental technology, R & D layouts, technology research and development of commercialization. On the other hand, STUST put great emphasis on the use of derivative intelligent property, the development along with the industry, and the pursuit of technological upgrading, supported by its deepening academic exchanges and activating local industries. All these medals and honors fully demonstrate the efforts and students of the fact that STUST has been encouraging its teachers to develop in science and technology and innovation. The strength of STUST in research and development in all sectors was once again fully demonstrated in the international competition, while the results also attracted manufacturers and created opportunities for more technical transfers.

In addition, four works were awarded gold medals, including "Helmet with Warning Device against Approaching Large Vehicles at the Rear,” "Active Error Compensation Platform," "Fetal Motion Measurement Device," and Interactive Platform with a Second Screen for Penetrating Display.” Two works won silver medals, including "Multifunctional Cutting Filter" and "Use of Light Patterns as Multi-Touch Screen” Three works won bronze medals, including "Remote Control with A Single Button to Produce Various Remote Control Signals," "Penetration Display of Blood Vessels,” and "High-Power Proton Exchange Membrane." These entries showed outstanding performances, winning brilliant achievements for STUST.
