Congratulations! "Finguide" by Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology won the Silver Award of the 2017 UXDA China User Experience Design Competition.    2017/11/24

Prof. Kun Ouyang and Lecturer Ya-Ling Chen of the Department of Innovative Product Design, Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology, led their team to participate in the 2017 UXDA China User Experience Design Competition. Over the past years, this competition has attracted a great number of students from the colleges and universities across the Taiwan Strait. This year, the team’s work “Finguide,” directed by Prof. Kun Ouyang, stood out among over 400 teams across the strait and won the Silver Award.

“Finguide” is a rehabilitation product that allows patients with stroke to start rehabbing immediately after their condition is stabilized. It reflects the traditional effect of mirror treatment by making the health hand take lead of the paralyzed hand, which can enable early intervention and rehabilitation to bring patients a better chance of self-care and return to the workplace. In addition to its very early intervention, the product makes use of the VR game and trains patients with memory and concentration and cognitive skills. The rehabilitation by means of VR games brings a lot of fun into rehabilitation, thereby increasing the willingness of the patient to take the initiative to rehabilitate and have fun with the family. The pressure sensor on the glove measures the amount of hand muscle tension, visualizing the patient's recuperation results by using the APP and understanding detailed information related the patient's recuperation. It can be used to turn invisible rehabilitation effects into visible data in such a way that patients, their families, and even doctors can understand more about the rehabilitation as well as the patient’s development and present conditions. It helps the patient achieve the ultimate goal of restoring his or her life and returning to the workplace.

The “Finguide” team, under the guidance of the STUST Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center this year, has won the 106 USTART program; in addition, through international fund-raising and commercialization training counseling, the team was also recommended to Singapore Accelerator and entered its final review. At present, they are actively setting up their company to enter SMEs Innovation Incubation Center for further nurturing and developing. The team is among the start-ups in Taiwan's newly established teams that run relatively fast and gain early access international resources in its development.

Acting Principal Deng-Maw Lu said that STUST is not only taking its students out, but also actively introducing industries and businesses into the campus. In recent years, STUST has been actively promoting campus innovation and entrepreneurship, emphasizing the concept of innovative theory with creative ideas that can be used in industry to solve problems. The Incubation Center of South Taiwan Science Park, and the Tainan Cultural and Creative Industries Park, both now run by STUST, are good platforms for integration with industry and market. STUST has been cooperating with well-known domestic and foreign venture capitalists, accelerators, and creative institutions, all of which has resulted in international cooperation. Through joint efforts, we are stepping out of the local framework and helping our SMEs and start-up teams, trying to offer different accesses to financial and business opportunities and accelerate the expansion of overseas markets.
