Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology has won third place of all the universities and first place of universities of science and technology in promoting patents for inventions.    2018/2/8

Intellectual Property Bureau of the Ministry of Economic Affairs has recently released statistics on the number of patent applications and announcements issued by the Ministry of Science and Technology in 2017. Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology, with its 108 invention patents, ranked third of all the universities in Taiwan, only second to Tsinghua University and NCKU. STUST made two steps further, up from its fifth place in 2016 and once again won first place of all the universities of science and technology. In addition, according to statistics from the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology ranked 8th on Fintech patent application, leading the top four national universities of Taiwan and becoming the only university listed among the top 10 institutions.

During his tenure as Vice President of Academic Affairs, Acting President Deng-Maw Lu of Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology has already noted the importance of patents to the industry. The main focus was on the quality and practicability of patents. An invention patent incentive system was promoted to guide the teachers and students in the school to position STUST as a "University of Science and Technology as the best partner for industry." While focused on core technology research and development through interaction between manufacturers, STUST has learned to understand market demand, research and development and design and layout of patents. In order to strengthen the commercialization of R & D results and the implementation of knowledge industrialization, STUST has never stopped promoting the compilation of patents and research handbooks and conducting exhibitions of research and development of allied schools. It constantly invites exhibitors to visit the campus, matches different technology companies, organizes patents and research value added competitions, carries out cross-field bonuses for quality patents by all teachers and students at STUST, and eventually assists them in developing the concept of technology into practical products. Subsequently, the R & D achievements and promotion mechanism of Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology have been greatly affirmed by the Ministry of Science and Technology. In addition to obtaining the "Grant-and- Concession or End-of-Maintenance Case Authorization" issued by the Ministry of Science and Technology in 2018, it was also granted NT$ 1.1 million to promote the "Invention Patent Application Maintenance and Promotion Plan for the Ministry of Science and Technology." Through the promotion, high-quality patents in the project could be generated, so as to achieve the effect of assisting industrial technology in upgrading and technical transformation.

With its emphasis on quality patents, Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology in recent years has developed a number of advanced technologies, drawn the attention of domestic manufacturers, and carried out technical cooperation and transfer with important manufacturers, such as Foxconn Precision Industry Co., Ltd., which jointly developed a "feeding assistant robot" with STUST. In addition to providing NT$ 6.98 million development funds, Foxconn paid STUST a technology transfer fee worth of NT$ 1 million. For the use of roll metal mesh production technology, the Japanese DAICEL material signed a NT$ 1 million worth international cooperation contract with STUST for production and learning. The technology can significantly improve the efficiency of soft OLED lighting. Another patented "piezoelectric patch sensor", in conjunction with the cloud-based system, is being developed into a patch sensor system for logistics sensing packages to provide the logistics industry with a tracking device for the delivery of goods to monitor whether the goods are subject to external forces and heavy wrecking damage. It has now been tested by the field testing of Hsinchu Logistics Company. For the technology, STUST has signed with Intelson Technology Co., Ltd for a NT$ 1.8 million production and education cooperation project; with Shengquan Technology Company, STUST also signed a NT$ 1.5 million industrial and technological cooperation and a NT$ 820,000 technology transfer.

Over three consecutive years from 2015 to 2017, STUST was approved by the National Experimental Research Institute with its patch-type force sensors used in real-time monitoring program (iTape), worth of NT$ 5.71 million. Biotech health products and protein production core technology are the strength of Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology. With the establishment of Plant-Based Medicine Research and Promotion Center, STUST has been working with Red Shrimp Hong Kong and other companies, jointly developing new plant-based medicine for Alzheimer's disease and diabetes. In 2017, "Development of Alzheimer's Disease Treatment Program with New Turmeric Derivate" became the only one that has been approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology in the biomedical field of "New Type Production, Learning and Research Linkage Project. Among all the private colleges and universities, STUST was the only one to have gained access to subsidies as much as NT$ 20 million. The current development of new medicine has been moving forward smoothly, expected to start up by the end of 2019. Income from health food licensing is estimated to be more than NT$ 10 million, while new technology transfer is expected to bring in more than NT$ 1 billion. Acting President Deng-Maw Lu further pointed out that the most important element of invention is creativity. With more than 18,000 teachers and students altogether, STUST has the biggest source of creativity. Through various incentive measures and in-school competitions, the school continuously turns the creativity of teachers and students into concrete patent achievements. Through various promotion methods, STUST can really use the patents in industries and implement the social responsibilities that the university should take.
