Prof. Deng-Maw Lu was elected the fourth President of Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology by the Board of Directors on the second day of April, which is to be submitted to the Ministry of Education for approval. The term of office will be four years, from August 1, 2018 to July 31st, 2022.

According to Dr. Ching-Chiong Chang, Chairman of the Board of Directors, the election began with the generation of staff representative candidates on Oct, 30-31, 2017, in accordance with the STUST Law of Presidential Election and Dismissal. An election committee consisting of a total of 11 members was approved by the board of directors on November 22, including directors, teachers, administrators, and alumni. The election committee publicly solicited the presidential candidates from December 15, 2017 to January 31, 2018. After three sessions of prudent discussion, three president candidates were recommended to the board of directors on the basis of the President Election and Dismissal Law on March 15. The final voting was done on the basis of secret ballot by the directors according to the principles and contents of the president candidate's reports. As a result, Professor Deng-Maw Lu won more than half of the directors’ votes and elected the fourth president of the Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology.

The board of directors of Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology have high expectations for the new president. They had hoped to find a principal who can take the lead and help the university make further progress. Therefore, they listened very carefully to all the reports of the candidates on the concept of governance and administration over the university; they also asked a lot of in-depth questions before the new president was elected by way of secret ballot. Of course, the candidates were very knowledgeable and capable. It was inevitably regretful that only one could be the president. However, the directors were still grateful to all the candidates who participated in the election of the fourth president of Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology and their support for the school. It is greatly hoped that everyone will continue to be concerned about Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology and bring the university to a higher level. The board of directors also hopes that Prof. Deng-Maw Lu, the new president of the university, will make the school move forward in accordance with the motto: “Whatever taken from students should be used on and for students.”
