The 2019 Taiwan Innovation and Technology Exposition was grandly launched at the Taipei World Trade Center in Taipei. The organizer invited more than 50 well-known international companies and institutions from Europe, America, Japan and Southeast Asia to participate in the exhibition, exhibiting nearly a thousand innovations in technology. The exposition was divided into three major theme pavilions: "Future Technology," "Innovative Invention," and "Permanent Development." In order to encourage domestic talents to invest in research and development, professionals and experts were invited as judges to select the works in the "Invention Competition Area." The exposition attracted nearly 200 companies and universities to participate in the competition. Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology won one gold medal, three silver medals, and six bronze medals—the results were quite brilliant.

"Smart Hearing Solution" by Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology won the gold medal, which was invited by IP Management Promotion & Administration Center at Taiwan, the Ministry of Education. The work was supported by SPARK project, organized by Prof. Yu-Chun Du, Prof. Jin-Feng Liu, and of PhD student Wei-Shiang Chiu of the Department of Electrical Engineering and assisted by Pei-Ting Tsai, a master student of the department. This innovative medical material can immediately replace existing products and traditional hearing aids. The team, currently developing and producing in the direction of commercialization, is expected to link with the industry in the next year.

The three silver-winning works are "Visually Impaired Wisdom Aid System," "Smart Drug Identification System," and "High Pressure Sealing Box Device and Soft Plate Water Gas Permeability Measurement Method." "Visually Impaired Wisdom Aid System" guarantees the safety of the visually impaired person to walk alone; if an accident occurs when he or she fell down, his or her family member or the nursing staff can be notified in time immediately. "Smart Drug Identification System" can instantly identify medicine to prevent chronical patients from mistaking medicine. "High Pressure Sealing Box Device and Soft Plate Water Gas Permeability Measurement Method" is the world's first calcium test that has achieved WVTR<1x10-5 g/m2/day for the gas barrier soft board verification market of OLED/OSC high-end products. Its commercialization has been subsidized by the Ministry of Science and Technology in its 2019 industry-university cooperation project plan for a NT$ 1.2 million grant.

In addition, the "Innovation and Invention Museum" was jointly established by the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Education in the meeting, with the goal to realize innovative DNA dreams and eliminate boundaries. It called for universities and research institutes to participate in its selection, focused on such aspects as smart life, smart medical care, wisdom 59 new technologies, smart transportation, and smart green energy. Under the fierce competition, three works from STUST were selected, including "Smoke-Removing Device with Smart Detection" (by Prof Rui-Tang Chen from the Department of Optoelectronics), "Tumbling Detection System Based on Artificial Intelligence Edge Computing Technology" (by Prof. Wan-Rong Chang from the Department of Electronic Engineering), and "CAN Bus Diagnostic System” (by Prof Jing-Zhou Tang from the Department of Electronic Engineering). Each work came with a technology that can be used currently or in a short period of time, as well as considerable market value.
