Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology held the unveiling ceremony of its Applied Biotechnology Modularized Process Production Line Factory on August 7. The applied biotechnology industry covers food, agriculture, environmental protection and specialty biotechnology. Manufacturers are actively expanding overseas markets, increasing at an annual compound growth rate of 5.6%, with an output value reaching NT$110.6 billion by 2019. Considering the prospects Infrastructure construction and national development of innovative industry trends as an indicator for cultivating talents in national key industries, the Ministry of Education has been promoting the "Ministry of Education's Optimized Technical and Vocational School Implementation Environmental Plan" to prepare for the high-growth applied biotechnology industry and cultivate technical talents needed by the industry. The Ministry subsidized Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology in building its Applied Biotechnology Modularized Process Production Line Factory with a funding of NT$ 30 million. The university has invested another NT$ 15 million to repair the site and build a practical field that is pro-industry and academic and cultivate outstanding talents with immediate combat capabilities required by the industry.

Yu-Hui Yang, Director of the Technical and Vocational Department of the Ministry of Education, said that the production line factory built this time has a diffusion effect and can share resources to surrounding schools. In addition to partner schools, there are also neighboring high-tech schools using practical fields to provide related professional functions. Training allows young students to win at the starting point, and to have the professional skills needed in the workplace before graduation, achieving the cultivating effect of "theory and practice complement each other, with an added value of professional certification."

The Applied Biotechnology Modularized Process Production Line Factory is a resource sharing platform. In terms of teacher training, the leading Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology and its partner universities—Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology, Gaoyuan University of Science and Technology, China University of Medical Science and Technology, and Far East University of Science and Technology—have cultivated seed teachers and support each other's teachers. In terms of student training ability, it will arrange training course guidance examination photos and cooperate with the industry to practice internships to meet the needs of the industry, so that they will have practical skills in the industry. Therefore, related industries and schools can share equipment and teaching resources through the website and practical field built by this project before using the practical field to link together regional high-level engineering jobs and cultivate more applied biotechnology industries.

Deputy Mayor Ching-Hui Chao of Tainan City also stated at the meeting that Tainan City is an important town in Taiwan’s applied biotechnology industry, especially in terms of the output value food of biotechnology, which accounts for the second largest in the country. Currently, there are more than 400 applied biotechnology manufacturers in Tainan. The Applied Biotechnology Modularized Process Production Line Factory of Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology is the only practical field related to the applied biotechnology industry in the country approved by the Ministry of Education. It is very unique. In addition to providing excellent environment for future development and assistance in expanding the market, the Tainan City Government can also link together the talent cultivation and R&D energy of the Southern Taiwan Science and Technology University Student and tis Technical Production Line Factory, so that entering university will be equivalent to the guarantee of future employment.

This time, Micro-Giant Bioengineering Co., Ltd. and Legend Wine Co., Ltd. are both industry leaders. They are interested in the potential development of Applied Biotechnology Modular Production Line Factory and will establish "Cells and Microorganisms" in Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology. "Engineering Technology R&D Center" and "Legend Wine Brewing Technology R&D Center" are looking forward to subsequent industry-university cooperation to show brilliant results. At the same time, similar production-line factories and local industrial clusters can be used for industry-academic cooperation, effectively assisting relevant small and medium-sized enterprises to upgrade their research and development, so that they can further act as an important bridge between teaching and industry technology, and strengthen industry-academic cooperation functions. This factory will be able to achieve the goal of sustainable operation.

Deng-Maw Lu, President of Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology, pointed out that the Applied Biotechnology Modularized Process Production Line Factory, established by Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology, has an axis of talent cultivation covering production line courses related to food, agriculture, environmental protection, and specialized biotechnology industries. It will set up modular process courses with unit operating equipment, establish practical courses on fermentation process, bio-separation process, craft beer production, product formulation design and manufacturing, and use microbial nutraceuticals for food and medicine, agriculture and animal husbandry or environment, with focus on the production lines of microbial preparations, biotech cosmetics, and other product lines. Modular practical courses will be used to connect the entire product development process, so that students can understand the logic and unit operation principles of the entire product development and achieve the goal of "learning by doing and doing by learning." In the future, the industry will be able to provide human resources with immediate combat capabilities.
