  Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology and Shimen Elementary School held the "Summer Fun and Summer Art" Summer Camp to do education service in Schweitzer's way.    2020/8/13    

 
In order to encourage teachers and students to follow Schweitzer in caring for the disadvantaged with professional services, the Ministry of Education has been promoting the "University Teacher Candidates Following Schweitzer Education Service Program" to give full play to Schweitzer’s great love. To this end, the Teacher Training Center of Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology especially formed a service volunteer team of 9 teacher candidates with excellent academic performance. The "Summer Fun and Summer Art" Summer Camp was held at Shimen Elementary School in Tainan City recently. Professor Jin-Chuan Li, Director of the Training Center, and Principal Jen-Lin Liu of Shimen Elementary School co-chaired the opening ceremony and launched a three-week camping activity. This activity was planned with the assistance of the teacher candidates of Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology. In line with the educational service of practicing the loving spirit of Schweitzer, the volunteer service integrated the expertise of these teacher candidates and demonstrated what they had learned in the teacher training center of the university.

The curriculum of this summer camp consisted of many diversified creative courses combined with different colors and takes into account the whole-person development of students. The courses included a health course with the theme of "emotional research color" to help students explore their emotions and learn how to keep an self-awareness and emotion management, a Chinese language course with the theme of "Painting, Poetry, and Understanding" that allowed students to learn new poems and Tang poems and integrates the contents into their self-creation, presenting students' ideas through painting, and an art courses with the theme of "colors, lines and planes" that taught students to recognize the multiple changes of colors and strengthen their ability to think creatively. In terms of social sciences, the program was integrated with Anping’s the local "Oyster Culture,” allowing students to understand the history and culture of oysters and the local creative cuisine. Moreover, during the period of the camping activity, a half-day trip was arranged to deepen students' understanding of the oyster culture before informational classes began. PowerPoint presentations were presented through collaborative teaching to cultivate students’ overall ability of presentation course design. In terms of natural science, courses were based on the theme of "observing words and colors," which taught students to understand how human beings see colors and how light can have an effect on colored structures in our lives. In addition to general courses, there were also courses on professional dances, which enabled students to learn about dancing through body language and cultivated their artistic cultivation in dance from music. All these courses focused on the people, events, and things that students might come into contact with in their lives. Some courses started with "multiculturalism," leading students to learn about the multiculturalism in Taiwan through hand-cooking and guiding students through the course to the concept of "cherishing good fortune and loving things," which helped students use their rich imagination to turn waste into useful materials. In addition to these diversified courses, a class competition is also planned. The competition allowed students to learn about character education through the board game of Monopoly. It is hoped that this summer camp activity could enrich the summer life of the students of Shimen Elementary School and added to their lives a rich and joyful learning experience.

This summer camp activity was led by Prof. Shin-Hao Chen and Prof. Jia-Chi Wang from the Teacher Training Center of Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology. Prof. Chen, who led the team, said that the concept of the Southern Taiwan Masters and Students' camp this year was "creative thinking," with creativity, beauty, and colors as the main axis, emphasizing the core value of STEAM: cross-domain, hands-on, life application, problem solving and sense perception learning. With the rich curriculum contents offered by of the service team of teacher candidates from Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology as well as their cordial and careful guidance and creative teaching methods, they helped the young students find themselves the bright spots and advantages of intelligence, expertise development, and learning interests, making every student a person of good quality.
