In 2021, the 18th Yushiu Cup Creativity Award was pivoted on the theme of "New Life after the Pandemic." After the fierce competitions in the preliminary and semi-finals, the finals and awards ceremony were held a few days ago. The Yushiu Cup gathered talents in software applications, industrial design, audio-visual media, and other fields to build cross-domain cooperation, cross-border thinking and innovation capabilities, opening up various possibilities for innovative design and digital creation. After six months of soliciting and rigorous selecting, 18 outstanding works stood out in each category and finally 56 groups advanced to the finals. Under the strict review of the judges, the winners of various groups were announced. STUST outshone others with its two works: "Signs of Confidence and Growth" by the Department of Information and Communication in the Category of Micro-Film Creation and “Guard against Improperly Closed Car Doors” by the Department of Electronic Engineering in the Category of Software Application. They stood out among the many contestants, greatly favored by the judges, winning the first prize, one Best Work Award, and six Excellent Work Awards.

"Signs of Confidence and Growth," by the Department of Information Communication of STUST, the work that won the first prize, was highly recognized by the judges. With limited resources, the students filmed stories about the aboriginal teachers and students of the Pingtung Laiyi Elementary School and their land. The story records the life fragments of an aboriginal child—Oding Pan—from school to her home. The film integrates together the ancestors’ wisdom about planting, the careful advice of his mother, and his attitude of reconciliation with others. By means of the traditional aboriginal crop "red quinoa," the film cleverly builds up the structure of the story. The presentation of tradition, family affection, and friendship is accurate, and the biggest feature of this film is that all the actors are teachers, students, and parents from Pingtung Laiyi Elementary School. Their simple, sincere performance is very impressive.

"Guard Against Improperly Closed Car Doors" by the Department of Electronic engineering of STUST won the first prize in the Category of Software Application. This system sets up cameras near the car's B and C pillars to track people's faces and recognize the orientation of their faces. If one is facing the B and C pillars, the system will unlock and allow the door to open; if the system recognizes that one is facing forward, the door will be locked and cannot be opened. The installation of this device in the vehicle will force the driver and passengers to face the B and C pillars to open the door to prevent the door from being opened improperly.

As the advisor Prof. Dan-Ching Liang said, "Good works will never fall from the sky! Good works need to be polished carefully before they can be transformed into great works!" Most of the award-winning students this time were sophomores. The planning and shooting process was full of challenges. Students must enter the right situation in a short time and understand the core theme of the subject; the team had hardly understood food and agriculture education before they began to write good plans and scripts. This process was a practical learning process with "learning by doing, doing while learning" as the core concept. It required the students to "use their brainsa and hearts, and create with their hands" before they can produce and design "good works." This also required more than double the usual efforts and invincible perseverance. As the shooting locations were in Taichung, Changhua, Tainan and Pingtung, Prof. Dan-Ching Liang had to shoot with different student teams every Friday; yet, this process could allow students to learn how to shoot efficiently, develop their strategic thinking within limited time and with limited resources, and enhance their abilities to tell stories with images!

Deng-Maw Lu, President of STUST, said that it is not easy for the teachers and students to win 2 first prizes, 1 Best Work Award, and 6 Excellent Work Awards in the Yushiu Cup Creative Award. Great thanks should be given to their advisor’s hard work and the students’ efforts. In recent years, STUST has had outstanding performances in major domestic and international competitions. It is obvious that STUST has been effective in encouraging teachers to lead students to participate in various competitions at home and abroad, as well as a mature training mechanism for students. Their majors and techniques of industrial application have kept pace with international prestigious universities. He hopes that students who are brave enough to face challenges and self-breakthrough can come to study at STUST, stand on the stage of various competitions, and accept the challenges of domestic and foreign arenas. After graduation, they can also directly invest themselves in the workplace and become seamlessly integrated into the industry, allowing themselves to master the blueprint of their future development.
