STUST USR project worked on the development of textures to preserve the beautiful works of the Shennong Street Lantern Festival in a new way.    2021/7/20

The STUST team of USR project “Local Creation and Dissemination of Cultural Heritage—Fucheng vs Yuejin,” sponsored by the Ministry of Education, has been working on organizing the traditional Lantern Festival at the Shennong Street Since 2018, a year of the dog, in order to regain the old street atmosphere of Shennong Street. During the Lantern Festival, students and residents discussed the contents of the lantern paintings in front of their houses. Every year, as the annual Lantern Festival ends smoothly, the team puts its focus on how to preserve the beautiful sight of the exhibition for tourists and residents at Shennong Street. This is also most important consideration of the Shennong Street team after the Festival has been held for four years.

The Shennong Street USR team tried to import the elements of the lantern show through the stickers people used, which not only preserve the beauty of the annual lantern show, but also use the sharing and marketing functions of the stickers to exhibit the beautiful works again. Therefore, the team focused on the riddles that are tied to the lanterns at homes by the residents every year. There were riddles prize postcards designed by students for every lantern. Dozens of outstanding works were selected from those exhibited in the Year of the Rat and the Year of the Ox to carry out the work of integrating different painting styles. The lanterns were then included in the creative collection shown in important venues of the Lantern Fair—the Yaowang Temple, the Jieguan Pavilion in Xiluodian District, the Wutiaogang Cultural Center, and the Jinhua Mansion for the major lanterns—together with a total of 32 stickers. This time, the stickers were designed by Ya-Hui Chen, a senior student of the Department of Creative Product Design, STUST, who was responsible for the independent study of the course "Shennong Street Lantern Fair Stickers and Cultural Creation." Ya-Hui Chen has participated in the cultural creation and regeneration courses of the old street since the beginning of the USR project in 2018; she also produced the first generation of "Looking for Little Goji and Linzhi" street game to get to know Shennong Street. Later, she participated in the self-learning course of the Lantern Lantern Show in the Year of the Pig and the Year of the Rat, helping the residents with the Lantern Show in Shennong Street. In addition, she also completed the 15 credits of the "Local Caring Program" of the USR program; she is an outstanding student of great talent cultivated along the way by this program.

After selecting the excellent postcards for the Year of the Rat and the Year of the Ox, Ya-Hui Chen first retained the original frame of the rat and the cow in the postcard before unifying the overall frame style. Then she used the painting application in the ipad, making the colors neither dull nor monotonous through the gradual ink brush, showing various layers of colors. She re-colored each sticker, keeping the original senses of the postcard and exhibiting a lot of new ideas. As for the core text parts of the stickers, Ya-Hui Chen and the project assistant Bo-Chin Hsu developed the idea together and strived to show the unique style of each sticker. In addition to the textures that can save the works during the Lantern Festival, the project team also used textures as elements to develop surrounding cultural and creative products, repeated the textures as the background, and add the important attractions of Shennong Street to design commercial business cards. The team created such products as portable flash drives, masks, mobile power supplies, and leisure cards, which were necessary during the pandemic prevention period. It also integrated life-friendly and practical products into the local cultural characteristics, so that more people could understand the beauty of Shennong Street.

As President Deng-Maw Lu of STUST pointed out, the team designed commemorative stickers for the Shennong Street Mouse and Cow Lantern Show for users of the communication software LINE, using the stickers to preserve and promote the beauty and traditional culture of the Shennong Street Lantern Show and to develop a new type of culture. The team showed great performance working on the preservation and display mode. People were welcome to search for information based on the key term "Shennong Family 2—The Daily Life of Rats and Cows" in the online sticker shop. Once again they had the opportunity to appreciate the beautiful works designed by the student team for the Lantern Fair in the Year of the Rat and the Year of the Ox.
