STUST undertook the Ministry of Education's "Friendly Taiwan—International students Hosting Families Project": Host families brought foreign students to explore Taiwan's aboriginal culture and the Chingliu tribe.    2022/3/31

The Ministry of Education entrusted STUST to undertake the "Friendly Taiwan—Overseas Student Host Family Project." In the two "Hunting Fun: Taiwan Cultural Experience Activities—Chingliu Tribe Tour" held recently, the host families and international students went to the mountainous areas of Taiwan—Renai Township in Nantou County—to explore the precious cultural assets of aboriginal people, allowing international students from different countries and regions to understand Taiwan's aboriginal culture and experience traditional tribal life.

STUST Invited 32 host families and 83 international students from 26 countries—including the United Kingdom, France, Czech Republic, Nepal, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia, India, Thailand, Peru, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Vietnam—to go to the Chingliu Tribe of Renai Township in Nantou County. Led by Maheng Bawan, the great-granddaughter of Mona Ludao, the host families and international students explored the Chingliu tribe, enjoyed the tribal treasures, and experienced the culture of the Seediq people.

The event arranged a tribal-style meal for the host families and international students to enjoy. After the meal, the tribal elders led international students to the "Yusheng Memorial Hall" for a visit, bringing the host families and international students a further understanding of the Wushe incident and the Seediq people. They visited the traditional Seediq costumes and traditional tribal houses and learned the traditional wisdom of the Seediq people's early house building. The main axis of this activity was the hunting culture experience, which was greatly enhanced by the tribal people who offered commentary and helped the participants experience the archery in a lively atmosphere! As some International students said, after a day of visit, they not only gained a deeper understanding of Taiwan's aborigines, but also appreciated their efforts in maintaining and preserving their precious cultural assets!

At the end of the event, the tribal people sang ancient Seediq ballads and invited the host families and international students to dance together in a circle. The event ended successfully with the ancient ballads and dances. In addition to the opportunity for the host families and international students to learn more about Taiwan's aboriginal culture, through the one-day activities of this event, the two visitors and tribal people came to know each other well. This is the beginning of their cultural exchanges in the future.

The project has helped a total of 4,731 families complete the training so far, and it has successfully matched 3,728 host families with 6,844 international students from 106 countries and regions, creating a platform for host families to interact with international students. At the same time, it keeps giving international students the opportunity to have an in-depth experience Taiwanese local culture. People who are interested in participating in international exchanges can participate in "online training courses," which are not limited by space and time; they can thereby become part of the project by taking classes at home. In addition, the project office will hold events from time to time, through which host families and international students can deepen mutual interactions and promote cultural exchanges.
