The DIY Education Society of STUST recently held a three-day DIY education camp at Jiangao Junior High School and Jiangjun Elementary School in Wangan Township, Penghu County. The digital camera teaching materials developed by the USR program, combined with the "To See Your Hometown" activity, led the school children to discover the beauty of their hometown with their DIY cameras.

The major idea of the DIY camera lesson plan, "I am your eyes—to See Your Hometown," was originated from the teachers and students of the DIY Education Society of STUST, which has been held for many years by the partner Program the World Association (PTWA). During the "To See Your Hometown" activity, it was found that many school children in disadvantaged remote rural areas had not been unable to participate due to a lack of photographing devices and facilities. Therefore, this year, a lesson plan was particularly designed with an aim to make a simple camera. By analyzing the simulated teaching process and needs, it was developed after many adjustments. In addition to hardware assembly, welding, and painting, the content of the lesson plan also included programming and photography courses.

The DIY Education Society of STUST crossed the sea to Penghu for the first time to hold a DIY education camp. Nearly 30 teachers and students from Jiangao Junior High School and Jiangjun Elementary School jointly completed the camera production and took pictures of the beauty of their hometown. At the end of the activity, the students took the stage to share their shooting works, voted for the most story-telling hometown photos, and drew a touching ending for the three-day and two-night camp. Shin-rong Jiang, a member of the DIY Education Society of STUST, said that the DIY camera was a newly developed lesson plan with unique challenges. By participating in the camp, he gained a lot of practical experience outside the classroom and left unforgettable memories of Penghu. Rui-feng Hsu, the instructor of the society, said that in addition to experiencing the fun of DIY, students could also have a deep understanding of the people, things, and events in their hometown through the camera. This was exactly what the society had looked forward to.

Deng-maw Lu, President of STUST, said that the USR Program of STUST and the DIY Education Society aim to change disadvantaged education, with long-term cooperation with PTWA to develop science and technology education material, help disadvantaged remote rural areas, and improve their scientific and technological literacy. Abundance has been affirmed by TSMC, UMC, Delta Electronics Foundation and other supporting organizations, which has also seen positive responses from the participants in previous camps. It is expected that the teachers and students of STUST will continue to care for the society with their professional practice and implement social responsibilities.
