STUST Cultural Heritage USR Project, together with Tainan City Cultural Association and Bureau of Cultural, co-organized a traditional craft DIY program for art teachers and friends, winning enthusiastic responses from the public.    2022/8/17

STUST USR project team—"The Local Creation and Dissemination of Cultural Heritage - Fucheng VS Yuejin," sponsored by the Ministry of Education, and the Tainan City Cultural Association jointly established the Five-Port Cultural Center at No. 79, Shennong Street. Every month it launched a series of lectures on Five-Port artisans and residents of Shennong Street and a DIY program on food and tea of Shennong Street. Due to the limited space of the street houses on Shennong Street, the number of people who could share them with the public was limited, so they cooperated with the Bureau of Cultural, Tainan City Government and moved the venue to Chikan Tower, a national historic site.

[A Scene of students cutting and sticking at the Chikan Tower] The content of the four traditional handicraft courses offered by "Artist and Friends of Art" this time was derived from the common craftsmanship in temples in alleys. The bright and dazzling decoration of the roof of the temple was based on "cutting and sticking craftsmanship"; the beams, pillars and statues were inseparable from the meticulous "wood carving craftsmanship"; and the gorgeous crowns and hats on the heads of the gods must be completed by skillful "metalworking craftsmanship." The table skirts and the clothes of the gods were all sewn stitch by stitch by "embroidery craftsman" craftsmen. The four artists who set up this course were all leaders in the traditional craftsmanship of cultural assets. The cutting and sticking process was taught by the master of cutting and sticking, San-huo Chen, who has won many craft awards such as the Tainan Art Exhibition by combining cutting and sticking with modern techniques. Bing-chian Lin, a master of traditional arts, was the lecturer of the course, who had won many craft awards such as Tainan American Exhibition. The woodcarving craft was inherited from Master Zheng-shiong Chen, whose works were based on the sword lion. Ji-shing Huang, who developed the sword lion from a traditional evil spirit into an art, also came to teach woodcarving courses. The metalworking course invited Chi-song Su as the lecturer, who emphasized the principle of "comforting the gods" in the production of god hats. The embroidery course was taught by Yu-chuan Lin, an artist who enjoys the reputation of "the No. 1 Embroidery Talent in Fucheng" and is currently working with his daughter to develop a refined and creative "Glorious Embroidery Village".

The course was launched on the Facebook of the Five-Port Cultural Association in as late as mid-July. After a few days, the list of participants was full and bursting. A waiting list has to be opened, but it still could not stop the enthusiasm of the people. The teacher had to hold another course in the afternoon for more people who love traditional crafts. Not all the students participating this time were from the Tainan area; there were many people from Chiayi, Pingtung, and Kaohsiung. There were also schoolchildren from Taoyuan to learn crafts; foreign parent-child families also came to participate in the course. There were four more for people who came to study traditional craft courses full-time in all kinds of courses, and many children in elementary and middle schools were accompanied by their parents to study.

Deng-maw Lu, president of STUST, said that although thunderstorms often rained in the afternoon in recent days, the event disrupted the activities originally scheduled at the Chikan Tower venue, but the project team should be suitable for the changing weather, and the four traditional crafts courses were all ended successfully and recognized and praised by the participating people. It is expected that the project team will respond to the wishes of the public and continue to hold relevant courses in the future, and implement the project team's commitment to promoting cultural assets to achieve the vision of cultural sustainability.
