In 2015, the United Nations released 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), covering social, economic, environmental issues and many others of global concern. Taiwan government also formally proposed the core goal of Taiwan's sustainable development in 2019. In response to the severe climate change caused by global warming, carbon neutrality has obviously become the focus of the promotion of global environmental sustainability. Carbon reduction is an urgent task.

In order to help the country realize the vision of sustainable development goals, STUST started to plan long-term solutions for the university's sustainable development many years ago, and it has incorporated Taiwan's sustainable development goals into the core value of medium and long-term school development, with a guideline covering the four aspects—school governance, R&D innovation, sustainable environment, and social participation—and a plan of 12 major actions. The work items include promoting the core value of morality, accelerating the achievement of carbon neutrality goals, improving energy efficiency, and promoting local care and international concerns. STUST also continues to innovate the research and learning ecosystem, strives to improve a fair and high-quality educational environment, and cultivates sustainable professionals to face uncertain challenges.
