The mixed reality game "Time-Space Detective—the Disappeared Secret Treasure MR," which was offered at the Taiwan Museum of History, is a cross-domain achievement of the cooperation between the Department of Multimedia and Computer Entertainment Science, STUST, and the ITSA talent cultivation program sponsored by the Ministry of Education—"Cultural Creativity and Multimedia Alliance Center Cross-University Alliance Promotion Plan Category B Sub-Project 8—Virtual Reality of the Topography of Gods and Monsters." The program team—the host of the program Cheng-shun Shie, Lecturer of the Department of Multimedia and Computer Entertainment Science, STUST, co-host Zhi-cheng Sun, Director of the Department of Multimedia and Computer Entertainment Science, and Associate Professor Bai-fang Xiao, Zong-shian Yin, Director of the Department of Information Engineering—brought together teachers and students engaged in general education, multimedia design, and information and communication and formed an interdisciplinary team. They adapted Tainan's rural legend "A Peculiar Case by the Canal" through 360-degree street views and mixed reality technology to create an otherworld virtual reality game "Space-Time Detective—the Lost Secret Treasure MR," with suspenseful, exciting content and love story elements.

A Peculiar Case by the Canal" is about the love story of the well-known geisha Jin-kuai Chen and her lover that took place during the Japanese colonial period, when the couple killed themselves together for their love. After the tragedy, many poems, dramas, and film adaptations have been created. In this work, the player plays a space-time detective from the future and encounters a theft at the 400-year-old cultural heritage expo in Tainan. A piece of cultural artifact with mysterious power disappears mysteriously. The incident is closely related to the peculiar case. Looking back at the background of the case, players can see that at that time, thanks to influence of western cultural, the freedom of love gradually sprouted under the advocacy of the Cultural Association, and there were many conflicts between old and new values in society. Even though the peculiar case is a story of bitter love, it reflects people's desire for freedom in the oppressive atmosphere of colonial society at that time.

【Teachers and students of STUST have demonstrated their excellent XR design capabilities.】

President Deng-maw Lu of STUST said that the university attaches great importance to the connection and application of humanities and technology. The virtual reality system (Virtual ARG System) constructed through this project can break through the barricade that most reality games require physical presence or long-distance travel. Players can talk to virtual characters in a multi-screen system to get clues, conduct investigations through 360-degree street views, and use Hololense 2 mixed reality helmets to look, touch, and grab objects and solve puzzles. In the future, the system will continue to use in marketing and tourism activities that combine local history and cultural characteristics and activate the field and drive crowds through XR game marketing.
