  STUST and Soka Gakkai Taiwan held the SDGs x Seeds of Hope and Action Exhibition, with teachers and students learning together to promote the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations    2023/4/28    

 

STUST and the Soka Gakkai Taiwan jointly organized the SDGs x Seeds of Hope and Action Exhibition in response to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations, hoping to have visitors’ resonance through the exhibition and encourage young students to jointly carry out actions for environmental sustainability and contribute to the sustainability of the earth.

The SDGs x Seeds of Hope and Action Exhibition was held at the Shiuchi Building of STUST from the 26th to the 27th. In response to Soka Gakkai's promotion of sustainable education, Prof. Fang-li Lin of the Applied English Department incorporated the stories of activists at home and abroad—Marion Shire's "Soufra," TFT Teaching for Taiwan, Jomber Chota Inuma, and Daisaku Ikeda—into the curriculum. She also invited Wen-ling Chen from Soka Gakkai to teach the course together. It was expected that through the application of English majors, the teachers and students of the school could be more familiar with the practice of bilingual tour guides through the one-month intensive practice, paying more attention to SDGs and accumulating practical experience in Chinese and English tour guides.

STUST's SDGs Practice Achievement Area showcased the teachers and students of the USR team of the school, such as "Zuoshan Tour Town Cultural Creation," "Handling Art Unlimited," and "Cross-domain Integration of Green Power Creation and Energy Conservation," and other USR team made great efforts in sustainable urban and rural areas (SDGs 11), reducing inequality (SDGs 10), and providing affordable and sustainable energy (SDGs 7). Yi-shin Tsai and Jin-cheng Guo, students of the USR team from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, were in charge of explaining the operation principle of the small wind turbine developed by the team; Yong-ru Yang, An-chen Zheng, and You-chen Fu, from the Department of Pop Music Industry, conveyed the realization of artistic integration and creation Concrete acts of cultural equality through introductions and guitar accompaniment singing.

The exhibition attracted more than 450 teachers and students to participate. In addition to the enthusiastic participation of individual students, departments offered courses and take the initiative to integrate this exhibition into the curriculum planning, including "Organization and Leadership" from the Department of Business Administration, "Family Medicine and Medication Safety" from the Department of Senior Welfare and Services, "Life-oriented English" from Applied English Department, and " Introduction to Industrial Engineering 4.0" Engineering," “Human-Machine Interface Design Practice," and "Electrical Circuits" from the Department of Electrical Engineering, "Organization Management and Management Research" from the Institute of Education and Economics, and "Energy and Environment" from the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Both teachers and students learned a lot more about the Sustainable Development Goals.

President Cheng-wen Wu of STUST said that STUST encourages teachers not only to integrate SDGs into the curriculum, but also to organize related promotional activities. This time, teachers and students in STSUT actively connected with the exhibition through different forms of participation and actions, including combining oral English training courses with exhibition guide training, promoting SDGs awareness on campus through USR project display and student performances, and teachers’ taking the initiative to lead the class to participate in exhibition activities. In the future, STUST will continue to sow the seeds of hope and action and look forward to more opportunities for exchanges and cooperation with the Soka Gakkai Taiwan.
