  STUST held the 7th Southern Taiwan Food Safety Forum to safeguard food safety and create sustainable development    2023/9/15    

 

STUST upholds the purpose of fulfilling the university's social responsibilities and safeguarding food safety in Tainan City. On September 15, STUST held the 7th Southern Taiwan Food Safety Forum at the Niantzi International Conference Hall of STUST. There were six themes: first, “Food Safety Risk Management; second, Law and Industry Self-Management; third, Review and Prospect; fourth, Looking Forward to the Future of Food Safety Culture; fifth, Preventing Food Fraud and Taiwan’s Food Safety Vision Discussion; and sixth, Discussion on Imported Food Source Management and Food Safety. The forum this year focused on the sustainable development of food safety. STUST will continue the previous discussion on imported food source management and food safety, conducting industry-government, academia, cross-department fairs, and objective discussion. The forum meant to reach a consensus by gathering the opinions of industry, government and academia, and cooperating with central policies to assist food businesses to implement independent management in import inspection and import management measures to ensure food hygiene and safety, and also to improve Tainan City’s food safety management system. Importing food and related products is both legal and guaranteed, so consumers can feel more at ease and work together to maintain Tainan’s reputation as a gourmet city.

The forum was addressed by Director Shi-bin Su of the Bureau of Health, Tainan City Government, and Vice President Rui-shing Chang of STUST, kicking off the food safety forum. There are three forum themes: "Food Safety Sustainable Development Strategy," "New Thinking on Taiwan Exported Food Strengthening Food Safety," and "Sustainable Development Strategies for Food Safety for Food Industry." A total of nine representatives from industry, government and academia were invited to serve as moderators and speakers. It was expected that 120 representatives from the public sector, food industry and Business operators, consumer representatives and people from all walks of life concerned about food safety issues.

The first topic discussed in the morning session was "Food Safety Sustainable Development Strategies." Emeritus Professor Ming-chang Wu from the Department of Food Science, National Pingtung University of Science and Technology, hosted the opening ceremony. Invited were Technical Director Pei-rui Chou from the Food Group of the Food and Drug Administration of the Ministry of Health and Welfare, as well as Professor Tsai-hua Gao from the Department of Food Science, Fu Jen University. They discussed China's implementation of sustainable development strategies for food safety and the discussion of food safety based on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The first session in the afternoon—"New Thoughts on Enhancing Food Safety and Sustainable Development of China's Exported Foods”—invited Professor Jin-kun Wang from the Department of Nutrition, Sun Yat-sen Medical University to open the session. He was followed by Jia-wei Chang, Chief Operating Officer of Sichuan Quality Verification Consulting Co., Ltd., who gave a lecture on the safety management of China's exported food and the future vision of the company. Chairman Yi-yung Tsang of the Taiwan Food Technicians Association discussed ESG sustainable development strategies for food companies.

The second session in the afternoon—"Sustainable Development Strategies for Food Safety for Food Industry"--was opened by Jia-sheng Yeh, Chairman of the Chinese Food Safety Control System Development Association. He was followed by Chi-yin He, Deputy General Manager of the Operation Center of Anxin Food Service Co., Ltd. (Mos Burger), who gave a speech to the food industry ESG practical business methods and new thinking. Wei-wei Lin, Manager of the Supply Chain Management and Quality Assurance Department of Dechang Co., Ltd. (McDonald's), shared the practical experience of food industry operators in achieving sustainable development of food safety. Finally, Director Shi-bin Su of the Bureau of Health, Tainan City Government (tentative) presided over a comprehensive discussion, communicating and exchanging opinions with industry, government, and academic representatives, as well as guests and industry players. It was hoped that the food industry would follow its regulations and assess risks when importing food raw material-related products. It was also hoped that the industry could continue to manage independently and look forward to the future goals of maintaining food safety and sustainable operations.

Vice President Rui-shing Chang of STUST said that STUST has invested school resources and professional manpower to implement the food safety and hygiene management system plan for seven consecutive years. In the future, it will continue to uphold the spirit of social responsibility and sustainable development and continue to assist the Tainan City Government in strengthening food safety and hygiene management systems. Industry operators have the ability to independently manage and jointly maintain food safety in Tainan City.
