  Engineering Ethics Talk & Chill—Tainan City Government visited STUST and talked to students about engineering ethics    2023/9/21    

 

Tainan City Government and STUST held a 2023-year Campus Engineering Ethics Seminar on the 18th. Many officials were invited, including Deputy Mayor Ching-hui Chao of the Tainan City Government, Chief Prosecutor Jun-yi Li of the Tainan District Prosecutor Office, and Director Bo-yang Gao of the Division of Political Ethics, Tainan City Government, and Chief Officer Mao-chuan Chang of the Southern Regional Investigation Team of the Independent Commission Against Corruption, the Ministry of Justice. 150 students of STUST from the College of Engineering, Institute of Finance and Law, and other related institutes to attend the seminar. The seminar was organized by hosted by Director Cheng-zong Luo of the Institute of law on Finance and Economics. The seminar focused on the eight aspects of engineering ethics, explaining how engineering ethics can help enhance corporate competitiveness as well as the importance and necessity of sustainable development, so as to build consensus from all walks of life in our society.

The quality of a public project has a great impact on the people. Therefore, engineering personnel should uphold the principles of honesty, selflessness, fairness and impartiality, improve their professional capabilities, rectify the dignity and image of engineering personnel, adhere to the ethical codes related to the following eight groups, well treating individuals, professionals, colleagues, employers/organizations, owners/customers, contractors, humanities, society, and the natural environment They should do their best, strictly observe fairness and integrity, treat contractors fairly, and implement environmental protection, pay attention to natural ecology, and cherish the earth's resources.

Vice Mayor Ching-hui Chao said in his speech at the event that integrity and openness are the foundation of the Tainan City Government's governance. The openness and transparency of the integrity platform will be used to eliminate hidden blind spots and improper interests. In addition, engineering personnel must understand that the highest value is public safety and welfare. Professionalism and ethics can affect not only the project itself, but also the safety of people's lives and property as well as the balance of the natural ecological environment. In a world where the international market is becoming more and more open to competitions, we must pay attention to engineering ethics and make correct judgments when faced with choices, in order to pursue sustainable development,

In his speech, Secretary-General Hui-ming Wang of STUST said that it was very meaningful to hold this seminar at our school. STUST pays special attention to ethics and integrity in teaching. In addition to teaching students various professional abilities, we always remind students of the importance of integrity and responsibility. The experience of experts and scholars in the seminar can help students clearly understand the importance of engineering ethics and corporate integrity, correct students' values, and guide young students to make correct value judgments in future employment. All these will help students pay more attention to engineering ethics and improve engineering quality.

Jun-yi Li, Chief Prosecutor of the Tainan District Prosecutor's Office in Taiwan, said that public projects have a huge impact on people's well-being, and the professionalism of engineering personnel should also start from the aspects of integrity, ethics, and engineering ethics. Professionals should regard social responsibility and personal ethics as the highest guiding principles.

Three keynote speeches were arranged in the seminar, focusing on issues of concern to students, such as ethics, conflicts and choices, engineering pollution, ecological imbalance, etc. The seminar Invited Chief Prosecutor Jun-yi Li of the Tainan District Prosecutor's Office, Director Sh-shiu Wei of the Bureau of Public Work, Tainan City Government, and Assistant Professor Zhi-yuan Zheng from STUST to give keynote speeches and focused talks. Through discussions on practical issues and exchanges of opinions, students learned to uphold the concept of engineering ethics, so that they would contribute to society and give full play to their talents when entering the workplace in the future.
