The STUST assisted the Tainan City Government in creating a 5G technology AR time cultural tourism, combining it with the Lin Department Store Parade to recreate the unique splendor of Suehiro Town and Wutiaogang Minato District    2023/12/4

The Tainan City Government, with the support of the Digital Industry Agency of the Department of Digital Development, is promoting the Future City-Tainan City Local Cultural Characteristics Integration 5G Application and Implementation Plan. On the 2nd day of December, in conjunction with Lin Department Store's "Fucheng Modern Parade," the "AR Time Cultural Tourism" experiencing activity planned by STUST was launched. It employed the high transmission and low latency characteristics of 5G private network combined with AR technology to provide the public with a fixed-point experience of the Japanese occupation and compare the past and present scenes of Hiromachi and Wutiaogang Port during the Qing Dynasty. It also took advantage of such technologies as object positioning recognition and AI optimal route calculation, inviting the public to wear AR smart glasses and embark on a journey of the old time where reality and virtual reality were intertwined, experience the immersive feeling of traveling through time and space, and enjoy the shock on their visual experience brought by technology.

Professor Hua-cheng Chang from the Department of Multimedia and Computer Entertainment Science, STUST, who was also the co-host of the project, used AR/VR technology to demonstrate the technology demonstration case of "AR Time Culture and Tourism" through the high-speed transmission of 5G and the virtual reality of AR augmented reality. By integrating different technologies, STUST hope to subvert the existing concept of cultural experience and allow the public to have the experience of traveling through time and visiting the old scenery of Wutiaogang Port and Suehiro Town. This AR experience is in line with the concept of promoting "integration of 5G applications and implementation plans with local cultural characteristics" promoted by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. It hopes to collaborate with local governments and use emerging technologies combined with the latest communication systems to bring a difference to local culture. At the same time, it also promotes the development of digital content, technology and other related fields in our country, which allows the public to experience the achievements of cultural and technological development.

During the Ching Dynasty, the Wutiaogang Port was the current river port business district along Haian Road, Jieguanting, and Shennong Street. It was a very important cultural area in Tainan. At the end of the Japanese colonial period, the Hiromachi area was centered on Lin Department Store. Located in the current Zhongzheng Road area, it was known as the "Tainan Ginza," the most fashionable and prosperous business district in Tainan at that time. The use of technology to recreate these cultural sites that once led trends in Tainan's history is not only proof of Tainan's profound cultural heritage, but also an important milestone in the development of Tainan's culture and technology.

【Through the application of AR technology, people on site could experience, at fixed points, the contrast between the present and the past in Hiromachi and Chingling at the end of the Japanese colonial period. The "Fucheng Modern 2023 Parade—Tainan 400 City Swing" event organized by Lin Department Store, combined with the Tainan City Government's "AR Time Cultural Tourism," was the best presentation of the public's "in-depth tour of Tainan" through technology. It allowed the public to roam, partly via walking and partly via mobile phones, tablets, or AR smart glasses, once again seeing the shopping malls around Hiromachi and Hayashi Department Stores at the end of the Japanese colonial period. It also combined both virtual and real scenes to recall the fashionable and prosperous people, things and events happening at the "Tainan Ginza" of Showa era.

Vice President Rui-shing Chang of STUST, also the project host of the "Future City-Tainan City Local Cultural Characteristics Integration 5G Application and Implementation Plan, said that Tainan is rich in local cultural and historical resources, with sufficient cultural heritage and multi-level historical texture. It is the best experimental site for culture and technology. This time, STUST combined technology with technical energy to create "AR Time Cultural Tourism." It not only combined 5G technology with AR technology and other related technologies, but also laid the foundation for the development of cultural technology in Tainan, with the hope of developing more cultural technology application cases in the future. It will also drive the booming development of related industries, allowing the public to experience this series of sumptuous feasts of 5G culture and technology.
