  The new project of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, STUST, opened up the future for green power innovation and talent development    2023/12/29    

 

The Department of Mechanical Engineering, STUST, cooperated with the Ministry of Education's new engineering project, called "Smart Manufacturing Future Talent Cultivation Program for Sustainable Development of SDGs with a Sense of Purpose." recently held the STUST Wind Power Cup Competition—Green Power Creation and Creative Net-Zero Implementation, inviting universities and colleges across the country to participate. The competition was promoted by Prof. Yi-ju Tsu from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, STUST, who has long been involved in educational innovation, as well as Prof. Rui-hong Liu and Prof. You-ren Chen, who are experts in the domestic green energy R&D industry. The competition mechanism was designed based on the real needs of the industry to cultivate student talents for green power industry, in order to develop students’ professional functions to align with the global layout of net-zero carbon emissions in 2030.

Cheng-wen Wu, President of STUST, said that sustainable energy and net-zero goals are now global trends. Therefore, talent cultivation for green energy sustainability and net-zero carbon reduction is very important for cultivating talents for industry and society. Teachers of STUST has been working very hard to promote various projects, such as green electricity implementation competition and cultivation workshop activities. He particularly gave thanks to industry, government and research institutes for their enthusiastic response and interaction.

【President Cheng-wen Wu of STUST was delivering a speech in the STUST Wind Power Cup—Green Power Creative Net-Zero Implementation Competition.】

This competition invited Deputy Director Le-ren Changjian of the Green Energy Institute of ITRI, Chairman Zhong-jun Hsu of the Small and Medium-sized Wind Turbine Alliance, General Manager Zheng-jie Hu of Junfan Industry, Manager Pi-da Rong of the Metal Center, CEO Tai-wei Chen of Torque Technology, Prof. Ming-hao Chang of STUST, etc. Experts and scholars from industry and academia came for selection and technical guidance to promote exchanges and cooperation between industry and academia, allowing industries and scholars to share experiences and resources. Through exchanges and cooperation, STUST will be able to better cope with teaching and practical challenges and jointly develop innovative education method. The competition was supported by manufacturers from all walks of life, including Jiayun Heavy Machinery, Junfan Industrial, Torque Technology, Yitai Industrial, Jingying Company, Cenming Company, and Taipower Renewable Energy Division, with bonuses and prizes exceeding NT$60,000. Through this large-scale competition, the educational concept of industry-university cooperation was fully reflected, and outstanding engineering talents with all-round literacy were cultivated to cope with various challenges in the future. They will be able to create energy, reduce carbon, and integrate digital and energy-saving renewable energy for future green electricity, making great contribution to the future development of green power.

【A participating team was assembling wind turbine blades in the STUST Wind Power Cup—Green Power Creative Net-Zero Implementation Competition.】

On the first day of the competition, the participating teams went to Guiren Wind Tunnel for a practical competition, using the wind tunnel to simulate environmental values and test the wind turbine blades designed by the participating teams. On the second day, they held a briefing presentation in the lecture hall of the Engineering Society of STUST, explaining the design concept and gains and losses, train their oral reporting skills, and develop their soft and hard skills through practice. With this new engineering teaching model of learning by doing, the Department of Mechanical Engineering, STUST, cultivates the future talent quality capabilities of technical and vocational students in problem-solving and communication and cooperation.

Prof. Sheng-zhang Wang, Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, STUST, said that the Green Electricity Creative Net-Zero Implementation Competition was not only a competition, but also an in-depth investment in future engineering talents. Through this practical activity, it not only trained students in their ability and professional knowledge, but also helped them learn to apply their knowledge to the real world as all-round engineering talents. They will contribute to the development of sustainable energy, digital integration, and renewable energy. Prof. Wang believes that these young engineers will be the driving force behind future green power innovation as well as the key force in achieving carbon reduction development in Taiwan.
