STUST and Chi Mei Medical Hospital established a joint research center today on May 2. President Cheng-wen Wu of STUST and President Hong-rong Lin of Chi Mei Medical Hospital signed a memorandum of cooperation to pave the way for the various activities that both parties are actively conducting a cooperation project.

In his speech, President Cheng-wen Wu of STUST particularly used Dr. Yuan-zhe Li, a winner of Nobel Prize, as an example to illustrate that it is very important to truly implement research to the point of making a contribution to mankind. He pointed out that the planning and execution of the joint research center established by STUST and Chi Mei Hospital was an important milestone. He hoped that STUST could cooperate with the outside world, using research universities, various possible research institutions, and industry research energy, combined with the scientific and technological research and development capabilities of STUST, to implement research results to the point of contribution to mankind.

President Cheng-wen Wu emphasized in the meeting that STUST is capable of making real things in the field of science and technology. This time, the energy of Chi Mei Hospital will allow STUST to do medical research, allowing STUST students to engage in front-end research, implement research results, create works that can contribute to human society, and put together everyone's effort to truly extend the value of the research results and become research results that contribute to human society. In the process, it is hoped that professors from STUST and Chi Mei Hospital can be working together, turning STUST into a research university, integrating students from different fields, and truly implementing research results.

President Hong-rong Lin of Chi Mei Hospital, a legal person of Chi Mei Medical Foundation, pointed out that STUST and Chi Mei Hospital are located on both sides of the Chunghwa Road section of Provincial Line 1 in Yongkang District, Tainan City, close to the Daqiao Railway Station, and teachers, students and hospital employees share a living area. This will continue the tacit cooperation that the two organizations have accumulated over the years, specifically focusing on future medical needs and regional development, aiming at the booming development of the industrial corridor in the Southern Science Park and the needs of employee health care and preventive medicine. The two organizations will work together to establish a health technology ecosystem. Through the complementarity of talent cultivation and medical fields, we provide not only disease care but also practice lifestyle medicine with new medical technologies.

The joint research center established by STUST and Chi Mei Hospital is mainly engaged in scientific research, technology research and development, and industry-university cooperation, with the goal of developing smart medical care, biotechnology, sports technology, and lifestyle medicine. The cooperation between the two parties includes jointly applying for large-scale projects and developing new technologies. The school will also provide on-campus space rental services—such as laboratories, research rooms, dormitories and sports facilities—and develop new lifestyle models, including the development of new foods for the elderly, health and sports activities, dietary consultation, etc. In addition, STUST provides kindergarten places, while Chi Mei Hospital provides internship opportunities for STUST nursing students. The two parties jointly develop science park child care gardens, healthy lifestyles, and on-campus staff psychological counseling and other related cooperation matters.

STUST stated that in response to the government's "Healthy Taiwan" vision, STUST will establish a "Smart Health College" in the future. In addition to the Department of Elderly Welfare Services and the Department of Child Care, the Department of Sports Technology and Nursing will also be established. STUST hopes to bring technological methods and tools into nursing work and reduce the workload of nursing staff. It is expected that technology and nursing manpower can be combined to do better nursing work.
