The STUST's Cultural Heritage USR Project cooperated with the Tainan City Cultural Association to hold an exhibition—Five Hong Kong Sugar Culture Roads to celebrate Tainan 400    2024/7/19

The STUST USR project team of Local Creation and Dissemination of Cultural Heritage—Fucheng vs Yuejin, sponsored by the Ministry of Education, together with the Tainan City Cultural Association, focused on the elements that have a profound impact on Tainan in celebrating Tainan 400 Years. All the people in Taiwan think that the food of Taiwan is very sweet, so "sweet" has become synonymous with Tainan. Mr. Shue-nong Wang, a resident of Shennong Street, is one of the founders of the new sugar industry. He chose ""Road to Wutiaogong Sugar Culture" as the theme for his exhibition and Shennong Street as the home venue of the exhibition from July 7 to August 31.

"Road to Wutiaogong Sugar Culture" is a joint venture between "Towards a New Era of Sweetness: Tainan's No. 1 Sugar Merchant Shue-nong Wang’s Exhibition" (hereinafter referred to as Shue-nong Wang’s Exhibition) and "Wutiaogong Port Desserts: Remembering the Past‧Satellite Store Exhibition" (hereinafter referred to as the "Satellite Store Exhibition") consists of two exhibition halls. Shue-nong Wang’s Exhibition uses display panels to show that Shue-nong Wang once lived at No. 54 or No. 56 Shennong Street while the exhibition is located at No. 52, which is currently an open space. Shue-nong Wang once served as the chief of Tainan Sanjiao Group and the president of Yanshui Port Sugar Co., Ltd. Before the establishment of new sugar mills, the sugar produced in Taiwan was harvested from sugarcane fields and sent to sugar mills, where the juice was squeezed by oxen dragging stone pulleys, and then boiled into brown sugar. The Yanshui Port Sugar Co., Ltd. that Shue-nong Wang serves was the first factory in Taiwan to produce "arable land white sugar." The sweetness and refinement of white sugar are better than brown sugar, which opened the way for Western-style dessert production in Taiwan. In addition, in order to allow parents and children to watch the exhibition together, interactive games for browsing have also been designed. In order to allow the public to have a more in-depth understanding of Shue-nong Wang, who was once the richest man in Tainan, a lecture on Chikan Sugar Road and a walking tour of Chikan Sugar Road were recently held at the Shennong Street Museum of STUST, given by Dao-tsong Zheng, Founding Chairman of the Committee of the Tainan City Cultural Association, which won enthusiastic responses and great support from the public.

The Satellite Store Exhibition is a continuation of Shue-nong Wang’s exhibition. It is supported by several old traditional dessert shops in Wutiaogong Area, and takes the public through a time machine through walking and visiting the shops to enjoy various representative desserts that appeared in Wutiaogong Area in the early years. In order to recreate these desserts of the old times, the project team worked with various stores to find old photos or the utensils used to serve them at that time. They also cooperated with Taiwan's Kagugo Food Model Company, trying their best to restore and represent the appearance of the desserts, including Baolaishiang Pancakes, candied fruit ice from Shiaoyuan Fruit Shop, Winter Melon Sugar Bricks from Yifeng Winter Melon Teashop, traditional cakes from Jinxing Candy Shop, ganna beans from Chuanyuan Candy Shop, Dutch honey cake from Baizhen Bakery, healthcare soup from Chunshing Chinese Drugstore, and Daiyuan Candy from Wutiaotong Port Company. When people take a stroll to these old shops, they can see models of retro desserts, scan the QR code to read the stories about the desserts and the old shops, and answer questions to get the flashcards especially designed by the planning team for each shop.

In this "Road to Wutiaogong Sugar Culture," the illustrations of the eight old stores were designed by eight students, including Min-jia Song and Yun Chen from the museum's design team. Through the exhibition, the achievement of talent cultivation program of STUST is shown to the public. By connecting the eight old stores in Wutiaogong Area, STUST announced its determination to expand beyond Shennong Street to Wutiaogong Area, steadily moving towards the goal of building the Wutiaogong Museum in the fourth phase of the project.
