  Teachers and students from the Department of Catering and Tourism of STUST are among the best in skills and won 2 gold medals and 1 silver medal in the "2024 Singapore Catering Challenge"    2024/9/3    

 

Teachers and students from the Department of Hospitality Management, STUST, recently (August 26 ~ 30) participated in the 2024 Singapore International Chef Gourmet Challenge Championship" (Singapore International Chef Gourmet Challenge Championship) with more than 500 contestants from ten countries, which is one of the world's top catering competitions. The teachers and students of the Department of Hospitality Management, STUST, lived up to expectations and ranked first among the three groups in the baking art category: Western-Style Exquisite Plated Dessert Category, Chocolate bonbon Category, and Travel Souvenir Category, winning two gold medals and one gold medal. This demonstrated the department's outstanding teaching effectiveness in practical skills.

Director Jia-sheng Yeh of the Department of Hospitality Management, STUST, said that since the establishment of the department, the department has continuously honed students' practical skills. The courses emphasize professional training such as basic skills, taste research and development, art decoration, on-site management and cost control that are solid and valued by the industry. The basic skills allow students to perform brilliantly in major competitions. Instructor Zheng-sheng Lin offers his rich experience as a chef in the industry, provides students with professional guidance and training, and carefully cultivates student talents. In this competition, Instructor Zheng-sheng Lin formed a team with students, and the teachers and students cooperated to win another gold medal in the Western-Style Exquisite plated Dessert Category.

Hong-yu Chen, a sophomore student from the Department of Hospitality Management, won the gold medal in the Chocolate Bonbon Category competition with the work "Love and Beauty," which included the selection of molds, appearance design matching, filling flavor design, etc. He was not very familiar with chocolate at first, but under the guidance of teacher Zheng-sheng Lin during the summer vacation, he had learned the basic details of chocolate tempering and chocolate making. He spent his time to practice more in-depth chocolate techniques in the future. Another sophomore student from the Department of Hospitality Management, Hui-zhen Tsai, created a silver medal winning work "Dance of Roses" in the Tourist Souvenir Group. The product was based on rose and lychee pound cake, covered with chocolate on the outside, and decorated with the presentation of chocolate roses, lifelike chocolate flowers, and overall creation of artistic beauty. Her work won unanimous praise from the judges.

Acting President De-guang Chou of STUST, said that the Singapore Catering Challenge brings together experts from all over the world to participate, and the competition is fierce and challenging. Teachers and students of STUST can learn through competitions and communicate with players from various countries. Daily practice can also hone students' practical abilities and prepare them for future industry integration, thereby cultivating outstanding young talents with management capabilities and practical skills who can work at such a high level. Winning awards in international competitions not only demonstrates the results of technical and vocational education's emphasis on practical training, but also affirms the hard work of teachers and students.
