  New Legal Challenges in the AI Era: Financial Law Institute Seminar Guiding the Direction for Legal Education and Industrial Development in the Smart Technology Era    2024/12/25    

 

The "2024 Smart Technology, Legal Education, and Industry Academic Seminar" was hosted by the Institute of Financial and Economic Law at STUST, co-organized by the Institute of Science and Technology Law of the Information Policy Council, and sponsored by the Li-tang Chang Cultural and Educational Teaching Assistant Foundation. It was recently held at the College of Business and Management at STUST. This conference brought together experts and scholars from academia, industry, and government agencies to discuss the integration of smart technology and law and its impact on industrial development. The focus of this seminar included the application of smart technology in the legal field, responses to information security threats, and the challenges posed by artificial intelligence to labor rights protection.

Li-tang Chang Foundation Supports Legal Seminar to Deepen Legal Education 

Distinguished Professor Rui-shing Chang of the Institute of Financial Law at STUST stated that the Li-tang Chang Cultural and Educational Aid Foundation has sponsored seminars at STUST for more than 10 years. Each year, the Institute of Financial Law selects topics that align with current affairs. This year, the rise of smart technology, artificial intelligence, and the digital economy has introduced unprecedented challenges and opportunities to our lives, work, and legal systems. As technology advances rapidly, the legal field faces the need to innovate and address emerging problems. Because of this, such academic seminars serve not only as platforms for theoretical exchanges but also as opportunities for industry and academia to collaborate and create a better future.

Legal Science and Technology Innovation: Practical and Academic Dialogue 

The special lecture at this seminar was hosted by Jin-li Wang, Director of the Institute of Science and Technology Law of the Information Policy Council. Hui-feng Hsu, the founder and lawyer of Fightmen Information Technology Co., Ltd., was invited as the keynote speaker. In his speech, Lawyer Hui-feng Hsu provided an in-depth analysis of the innovative development of Fightmen and discussed how to combine legal services with technology to enhance efficiency and accessibility. During the meeting, Deputy Director Zhen-hao Gu and Prof. Cheng-zong Luo served as panelists, sharing their insights and recommendations on legal technology.

Addressing Information Security Threats and Labor Rights in the AI Era 

In the first paper presentation session held in the afternoon, two key topics were discussed. Yun-chian Ruan, an associate analyst at the Digital Innovation Center of the Institute of Science and Technology, presented a paper on "National Strategies and Countermeasures for Information Security Threats—Centered on the United States." He proposed the U.S. response strategies in the field of information security and highlighted policy measures Taiwan should adopt to strengthen defenses against global information security challenges. Associate Professor Jun-lin Guo from the Institute of Finance and Law at STUST delivered a report on "The Application of Artificial Intelligence and the Protection of Labor Rights and Interests." He analyzed how the current legal system is adapting to AI advancements and explored ways to protect workers’ basic rights amidst AI challenges.

AI in Criminal Justice: Lessons from Germany 

The second paper presentation focused on two forward-looking research areas. Li-juan Li, an assistant professor at the Institute of Finance and Law, analyzed "The Application of AI Technology in Criminal Justice—Lessons from Germany." She discussed how Germany leverages AI to enhance judicial efficiency and accuracy. Yu-zhang Wang, an associate analyst at the Value Development Center of the Institute of Science and Technology, spoke about "Promoting and Developing the Digital Economy—Lessons from Singapore and Estonia." He explored their success stories and suggested practical insights for Taiwan’s digital economy development.
