  Cross-School Cooperation: the Department of Child Care and Education Partners with High Schools to Shape the Future and Cultivate SDG-Literate Professionals    2025/1/3    

 

The Department of Child Care and Education at STUST actively advances University Social Responsibility (USR). This semester, the department launched a series of courses and activities that seamlessly integrate academic theory with hands-on practice. These initiatives not only deepen students' professional knowledge but also foster community engagement by collaborating with local elementary schools, kindergartens, early childhood care centers, and high schools. By creatively incorporating the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the department contributes to sustainability and prepares students for impactful careers in early childhood education.

Deeply Cultivating Local History and Culture: Preserving Tainan’s Memories 

Guided by Chair Zhi-sheng Chen and Prof. Mei-zhu Chen, the Early Childhood Education team implemented a USR project focused on preserving and promoting Tainan's rich history and culture. Students developed service-learning courses themed around "Tainan History and Culture," featuring activities like “Tainan History Monopoly,” “Tainan Historical Buildings Puzzle,” and “Dutch Period Indigo Dyeing Fun.” In collaboration with Longgang Elementary School's kindergarten in Tainan City, these activities introduced children to the city's historical heritage in an interactive and engaging manner. College students involved in the project shared that their extensive research into Tainan’s history not only enhanced their understanding but also provided a sense of fulfillment through their interactions with the children.

Integrating USR Spirit into School Celebrations: Building Confidence and Skills 

Prof. Hui-min Ou and Prof. Mei-fang Chuo led students from the Department of Child Care and Education in organizing six educational activity stations for Linfeng Elementary School’s anniversary sports event. The stations covered topics such as traffic safety, special education, and health promotion, with activities tailored to different student age groups. The enthusiasm and active participation of Linfeng Elementary students underscored the event's success. For the university students, this experience was invaluable, enhancing their ability to design and execute educational programs and preparing them to excel as future early childhood educators.

Music Enlightenment: Caring for the Disadvantaged with Humanistic Qualities 

Prof. Shin-yi Wei extended her music education course to focus on the needs of infants and toddlers. Collaborating with the Good Shepherd Foundation’s Baby Home and the Guangming Early Childhood Therapy Center, students designed music activities suitable for children aged 0 to 3. These activities were later implemented in real-world interactions, providing students with the opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge. Participants noted that the experience highlighted the role of music in promoting physical and mental development among young children. This initiative also emphasized the department’s dedication to humanistic care and social responsibility.

Expanding Influence through Cross-School Collaborations 

The Department Child Care and Education actively collaborates with high schools and vocational schools to extend its educational impact. Prof. Mei-yi Shen and Wei-tsi Chen conducted storytelling, picture book, and rhythmic movement sessions with students at Guanghua High School. Meanwhile, Prof. Shin-yi Wei led instrumental music workshops at Zhongshan Industrial and Commercial College, and Teacher Yang Shue introduced horticultural therapy techniques to faculty at Zhongshan University of Commerce. These collaborations enriched the participating students’ knowledge and skills, sparking their interest in early childhood education and expanding the department’s professional outreach.

Integrating SDGs into Curriculum Design: Cultivating Responsible Citizens 

Through its diverse USR initiatives, the department demonstrated its commitment to the UN’s SDGs by fostering cultural heritage preservation and sustainable societal development. These activities enabled students to refine their professional skills while cultivating a sense of social responsibility.

Recognizing Excellence: Awards and Achievements 

The department’s efforts have led to remarkable achievements. Ching-fen Li and Jia-chi Liu were awarded the prestigious Ms. Li-ling Wu Scholarship, setting an example for their peers. Additionally, alumni such as Professor Yi-tian Zheng and Malaysian graduate Yi-jing Jiang were recognized as Outstanding Youth Representatives, reflecting the department’s dedication to excellence in early childhood education.

Recruiting Future Talent: Building a New Era in Early Childhood Education 

The Department of Child Care and Education welcomes students from diverse educational backgrounds, including general and vocational high schools. By integrating SDG principles and offering a wide range of USR activities, the department aims to cultivate skilled professionals who are also socially responsible.
