Under the guidance of Prof. Wan-Rong Zhang, the IoT Laboratory of the Department of Electronic Engineering, Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology, the team “Must Help the Blind,” formed by Zhen-Hao Chen, Zhi-Shuan Zhang, Yue-Shun Yu and Zong-Han Yang, won third place in the Robot Group with their work “Drug Recognition Device for Visually Impaired Persons and Its Cloud Platform.” The system architecture of “Drug Recognition Device for Visually Impaired Persons and Its Cloud Platform” is divided into intelligent glasses, drug identification devices, and cloud security management platform for visually impaired people. When the visually impaired wears the intelligent glasses, the camera on the glasses will capture things he or she sees. The image of the drug will then be transmitted to the drug identification device via USB to identify the type and quantity of the drug, and then a voice will notify the patient whether the medication is correct. The system uses AI deep learning technology to identify drugs, and its successful recognition rate has reached more than 97%, which can effectively solve the problem of taking wrong drugs in multiple chronic visually impaired patients.

Prof. Wan-Rong Chang, Director of the Internet of Things Laboratory at the Department of Electronic Engineering, Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology, said that the work “Fatigue Sleeping Warning Intelligent Safety System” is a group of sleepiness detection devices based on wearable intelligent glasses. With the wearable intelligent glasses, the team use the self-made 850nm infrared ray receiver to determine the eye opening situation and observe the frequency of driving the blink, which is used as the basis for fatigue and sleepiness. Through the system, the driver's fatigue and sleepiness can be detected immediately, and the driver is immediately alerted to wake up the driver. At the same time, the driver information is uploaded to the cloud management platform through low-cost, low-energy, and high-quality SigFox transmission.

President Deng-Maw Lu of Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology said that STUST has always attached importance to student-specific production. The theoretical explanation in the classroom means only the structure and concept. The key point is how to apply the concept effectively to problem solving for students to realize the benefits of learning and use. Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology provides a large number of special production funds for teachers and students. In addition to improving the R&D capacity, it can also be integrated with cross-system resources to guide the teachers and students through the breeding center and carry out related technology transfer.
