The 2020 Science News Reporting Award Competition held an awards ceremony at National Pingtung University. This year the competition saw enthusiastic participation. After a fierce competition among universities and colleges, the two news teams from the Department of Information and Communication of STUST won first place and the Judges’ Award in the "Science News Reporting Award Competition, as their performances were highly recognized by the judges. The purpose of this competition was to improve the scientific literacy of the news reading and listening public and encourage college students to explore the science of life through video reporting, enhance personal science knowledge (science popularization knowledge), and then spread correct science knowledge.

The winning report was produced by five students–Zi-Ching Luo, Jia-Yun Luo, Zhen-Ching Liu, Pei-Rong Yang, and Wen-Ting Tsai—under the guidance of Prof. Dan-Ching Liang from the Department of Information and Communication of STUST. They interviewed and produced an environmental science news report on "Fighting against Climate Change, Energy Saving and Carbon Reduction." From the perspectives of experts, young people, and elderly people, the report explores whether it is more environmentally friendly for people to switch to electric bicycles as the problem of PM 2.5 in air pollution is becoming more and more serious. At present, electric locomotives are "zero-emissions" when they are running. They do not produce carbon dioxide, nor emit strong odorous black smoke, nor produce fine aerosols. They are favored by young and elderly locomotive riders, and have a great impact on environmental protection and sustainable development. help.

Another award-winning report was produced by four students–Jin-Hong Zhong, Chun-Zhi Zheng, Zhi-Ru Liu, and Yu-Han Chang Zi-Ching Luo—under the guidance of Prof. Dan-Ching Liang from the Department of Information and Communication of STUST. They interviewed and produced an environmental science news report on "Era of Food Safety, Faith in Food Safety" and won the Judges’ Award (second place). The food safety problem has become more and more serious in recent years. The report brings the scientific knowledge of food safety to the audience in a way that is closest to life. The news report analyzes aspects concerning the question "Why does food spoil?" –a question people often encounter but don't understand scientifically. From the perspective, they cut into the theme of food safety and let everyone understand the common causes of food poisoning.

President Deng-Maw Lu of the STUST stated that scientific literacy is one of the core abilities of modern citizens and that correct science news reporting can improve people’s scientific literacy. It is hoped that in the era of new media, students can use more scientific news reports to enable more people to gain common science knowledge and improve their scientific literacy.
