Kumamoto University, Japan, held the Inauguration Ceremony of Taiwan’s South Taiwan Office of Kumamoto University at Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology on March 8. President Harada Yoshida of Kumamoto University and President Deng-Maw Lu of Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology jointly unveiled the Kumamoto University Taiwan South Taiwan Office on behalf of the two universities. Kumamoto University Vice President Takashima Kazuo and several faculty members and directors of Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology witnessed the ceremony. The firm is the only overseas office of Kumamoto University in Taiwan, showing the close relationship between the two universities.

Kumamoto University was established in 1949 in Kyushu, Japan, which is an excellent university. In 2004, it signed an academic exchange contract with Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology. In 2006, it signed a contract of tuition exemption for students of the College of Engineering from. In 2008, an inter-school academic exchange contract was signed. As of 2019, the number of students studying at the Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology in Japan for short-term exchanges has been more than 300. Thanks to the establishment of Kumamoto University Taiwan Southern Taiwan Office at Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology, it is believed that the cooperation between the two universities will be prosperous and create more opportunities for exchanges and cooperation between teachers and students.

President Harada Yoshida of Kumamoto University said that he was very grateful to Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology for providing the venue and assistance to set up the office in Taiwan as a base for Kumamoto University to promote internationalization activities in Taiwan. The establishment of the office is a key support for the “Top Global University Project” of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Japan (Ministry of Education). Kumamoto University is a world-class teaching research base and actively promotes research for the internationalization of educational activities. In order to attack excellent international students to Kumamoto University, build a network of graduates, and promote exchanges and cooperation with other sister schools, so far, Kumamoto University has set up seven overseas offices in China, South Korea and Indonesia, hoping to open up more overseas bases.

President Harada further pointed out that Taiwan has an advantage in both geographical location and the number of international students. Today, it chose to set up Taiwan Southern Taiwan Office at Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology because STUST is highly rated in Taiwan and is fully committed to higher education. In promoting Japanese language education, the two universities exchanged frequent academic and cultural exchanges, such as large-scale international seminars and student exchanges.
Kumamoto University Taiwan South Taiwan Office will be used mainly as a network base for students studying at Kumamoto University and research scholars at the University of South Taiwan University of Science and Technology, providing information about academic institutions and students in Japan and Kumamoto University. It will also offer Information on international conferences and internships held by the two universities, working as a base for summer camps, oversea study, and seminars for students of Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology as well as a network center for contacts with other sister schools in Taiwan and international activities of Kumamoto University in Taiwan. It is expected that the establishment of the Kumamoto University Taiwan Southern Taiwan Office will not only bolster the cooperation between teachers and students between Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology and Kumamoto University closer, but also bring Taiwan and Japan into a higher level in education research.

President Deng-Maw Lu of Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology said that currently STUST has 246 sister school contracts with overseas universities in the world, including 32 sister schools in Japan. Faced with the trend of internationalization in the 21st century, it is important to foster talents with international thinking, language skills, and communication skills to meet the demand of the global human resources market. Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology has spared no effort in cultivating international talents. Over the past years, it has actively sought to establish various exchanges with internationally renowned universities.
