The 23rd TDK Cup National College of Creative Design and Production Competition., directed by the Ministry of Education, recently held a final competition. The theme of the competition was "Goldsmith Robot—the Basket is You" is based on the basketball game of college students. In addition to the comprehensive ability of coordination, strength, cooperation, and judgment required for basketball. The design focus is on robots. The competition was consisted of Automatic Group, Remote Control Group and Flight Group. The key to winning is team cooperation, and each winning team was given $NT 200,000 and tickets to Japan to visit and learn from the 2019 Robot Competition.

TDK Cup National College of Creative Design and Production Competition is the earliest and largest robotic competition in Taiwan. It has entered the 23rd session this year. a institution in domestic universities and colleges. It is the best stage for the exchange of teachers and students from related universities of science and technology. It is certainly the most closely watched robotic competition in Taiwan.
The student team of the Department of Electrical Engineering, Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology, directed by Prof. Wen-Yao Chen, were formed by Jia-Yu Hsu (graduated from National Water Industry and Commerce), Jia-hong Chen (graduated from National Pingtung Gaogong), Bai-Yan Ding (graduated from National Beigang Agricultural High School), and Ting-Han Lin (graduated from National Pingtung Industrial High School). The team won second place in the Remote Control Group and Excellent Creativity Award. At the beginning, the team designed the robot based on the principle of fastness, precision and stability, which enabled the participating robots to have excellent performance in terms of gripping ability, throwing ability and working accuracy. During the 4-minute competition, the robots completed a barrier crossing, a picking-up of three scoring balls, and a climbing-up to a 20cm-high launching platform to pitch a ball. All these contributed to their achievement of excellent results.
In addition, the other two teams of the Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology—“Long-Du Working Shrimp” and "Cats Go for a Basketball Shooting"—won Excellent Creativity Awards. One team, directed by Prof. Cheng-Han Li of the Department of Electrical Engineering, was formed by senior students Shu-Wei Yang (graduated from National Shinying Senior Engineering High School), Jun-Yi Shen (graduated from Taipei City Datong High School), Wei-Wei Guo (graduated from Tainan Private Shing-Guo High School), and Jia-Min Lin (graduated from Beimon National Agricultural and Technical High School). The other team, directed by Prof. Min-Guang Wu of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, were formed by other four students: Pin-Ni Li (graduated from National Fengshan Commercial High School), Yue-Hui Zhong (graduated from Affiliated High School of National Tainan University), Zhi-Chien Huang (graduated from National Fengshan Commercial High School), and Jia-Wei Tien (graduated from National Fengshan Commercial High School). The two award-winning teams designed the work from the beginning with the main actions including "identification," "smashing the ball," "avoiding obstacles," and "throwing the ball." The robots needed to capture the color ball of the specified color in the competition, and score according to the number of the ball they threw into the basket. The team performed quite well in the competition and was greatly acclaimed.
Deng-Maw Lu, President of Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology, said that robots are the focus of industrial automation and industry 4.0 and one to which the research and development topics that Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology attaches great importance. The participating teams must have solid practical skills and implement them in special production as well as great ability to solve problems. The student award-winning department will implement creative ideas and techniques in the works through teamwork. The instructor will provide professional guidance during the development of the students’ works, so that students can acquire various professional and industrial application techniques. After graduation, they can work in related industries and achieve the goal of seamless integration with the industry.
