Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology held the 2019 National Higher Vocational English Word Competition recently, with 168 enthusiastic students from high-level and comprehensive high schools nationwide. This year the vocabulary competition was sponsored by the Higher Education Sprout Program, the Ministry of Education, and organized by the Department of Applied English for the seventh year. It was hoped that through the competition, the English characters and English reading ability of vocational college students will be enhanced, thereby upgrading international competitiveness and strengthening exchanges among vocational schools across the country.

In order to make the competition more selective, the organizer classified the contestants into English majors and non-English majors. The content of the competition included vocabulary for grades 3-5 and 3-4 of the high school, which is commonly used by the Ministry of Education. The test content is divided into three major types: "English Listening and Chinese Options,” “Chinses Reading, English Listening, and English Spelling," and "English Reading and Chinses Options," each with 100 questions. The computer test was conducted in the multimedia classroom of the Wenbin Hall of the N Building. The question bank was provided by Sanmin Book Company. The university also commissioned Penghu Bay Online Test to set up a competition website. Nanrong Culture and Education Foundation and Faith, Hope & Love Foundation for Education promoted the competition. In order to stimulate students' self-learning motivation, the organizers also commissioned the Penghu Bay Online Test to set up a perennial competition simulation practice area for players to fully practice before the game.

On the day of the competition, students from all over Taiwan were accompanied by teachers or parents from all schools. They came to the Southern Taiwan Campus from 9:30 and made a final sprint before the competition. The participating students fully demonstrated their positive attitude and strong learning in English. Some contestants said that they hoped to challenge their English strength by this national competition and compete with the entire English elite. During the breaks, the instructors and contestants also took the opportunity to visit the campus and communicate with the teachers of the Department of Applied English.

In this competition, each group was given 3 first prizes, 5 second prizes, and 10 third prizes. The winners were awarded a certificate and prize money. In addition to the awards, the organizers have encouraged the participation of students to hold the spirit of diligence. Since 2015, special awards have been added to encourage contestants with scores of 210 or above, overall scores of contestants in recent years have significantly improved, and the award-winning schools have also become quite diverse.

The list of winners was posted on the School of Applied English website. Chair CJ Yang of the Department of Applied English, Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology, encouraged all participants at the award ceremony. It is expected that students and students will improve their English word recognition ability and motivation for English learning, in addition to improving their English language skills. Students were also encouraged to participate in the competition in the future.
