To welcome the arrival of more than 3,500 freshmen in the campus, Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology held the 2018 Freshmen Welcome Concert on the day of the freshman orientation at the school's stadium—San Lian Building. This concert was held as a freshman event for the first time in 49 years since the founding of Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology. The new president, Dr. Deng-Maw Lu, is committed to promoting students' happiness and healthy learning, based on an educational concept that is lively and liberal. With a healthy and much heated concert for students, he hoped that the school could show its warm welcome to all the new students. This new approach, as he hoped, would bring up a new atmosphere at Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology, leading the students to studies with great health and happiness.

The host of the concert was Yi-Zhen Lu and Jing-Yu Huang, senior students of the Department of Pop Music Industry. There were a series of performances by the student popular music groups, including Andy Lin, Spreading Epidemic, Charming Great Voice, and Pippi Bao the Slaughter. A lot of great groups were invited, including the award-winning Liao-Wong Band, RPG & NEOSO, guitar teacher Hsin-Hui Pu—who participated in the "Voice of China" show, and the great solo singing Hsai-Zhi. Their performances brought up the heat and passions of all the students.

At the concert, Prescient Deng-Maw Lu of Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology gave a speech before the concert, encouraging all the students to study and learn in joy and cultivate good habits of sports. He also expected students to study hard in college for four years, to sing well, to exercise well, and to create better and different learning styles. After the speech, President Lu sang "Perseverance in Life" and one of the most popular songs "We Are Not the Same,” thus unveiling the concert. On the prelude, students kept barking and shouting for another song as the president singing skill is great, President Lu sang one more song—“I’ll Back You Up.” The atmosphere showed the heat of the night, the cheering sound never stopped, and everybody was so high at the concert.

The 2018 Freshmen Welcome Concert was hosted by the Student Union and co-organized with the 26 student societies of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and other departments. Thanks to the Department of Pop Music Industry, the concert was lively and extraordinary. In addition to invited artists, the professional performances of student groups from the Department were amazing. All the behind-the-scene technology, the stage lighting, and the sound effect management were done by teachers and students of the department. The teachers and students also assisted in the construction of the stage as well as the performance on the stage. Every grade brought out its excellent band performance. A variety of music styles, from popular to Jazz, delivered wonderful musical performance to all younger students. Through the exquisite performances of the 2018 Freshmen Welcome Concert, the dazzling lighting effects and well-designed activities, and finally, in the atmosphere of hip-hop rock for the youth, unforgettable memories were given to all the freshmen on their orientation day.
