STUST had a brilliant record of winning three golds and four bronzes in the 2020 Taiwan Innovation Technology Expo!

The 2020 Taiwan Innovative Technology Expo was held in Taipei World Trade Center Hall 1 from September 24 to 26. This year, the resources of 10 ministries were gathered, with more than 1,000 innovative technologies exhibited and focused on “Resilient Taiwan and Smarter Future.” There were three thematic sections: Innovation Pilot Section, Future Science and Technology Section, and Sustainable Development Sector. In order to encourage outstanding domestic talents to invest in R&D and innovation, a group of professionals was specially invited as judges to select works in the Invention Competition Section. In the fierce competition, STUST won three golds and four bronzes with its brilliant performances.

The three works that won the gold medal are "Non-Silver Electrode Moisture and Oxygen Penetration Sensing Structure," "Vector Object Expansion and Typesetting Method," and "Silk Protein Membrane Manufacturing Method." The team of "Non-Silver Electrode Moisture and Oxygen Penetration Sensing Structure" is currently applying for the grant of "Industry-University-Research Value Creation Program" by Ministry of Economic Affairs and is in active cooperation with manufacturers to establish a commercial electrical calcium test and measurement system. If successfully developed, it will be the world's first commercial calcium test system to measure ultra-high gas barrier rate. "Vector Object Expansion and Typesetting Method" provides accurate typesetting solutions that meet industry needs, effectively handling NP-Hard calculation problems. "Silk Protein Membrane Manufacturing Method" can produce a number of daily necessities that replace synthetic plastics and at the same time remote the doubt that synthetic plastic products may affect human health and cause serious environmental problems.

The four works that won the Bronze Award were "Solar Module for Building," "Smart Communication Device Based on Multiple Authentication Locking," "Communication Method for Emergency Care Based on Indoor Positioning," and "Integrated Virtual Reality Rehabilitation Device." "Solar Module for Building" can make the room receive unvarying light, so it can solve the problem of uneven transmittance often occurring to traditional solar panels. "Smart Communication Device Based on Multiple Authentication Locking" has a schedule setting function that allows it to, according to the password lock the communication unit, limit the number to be answered, or dial to the designated telephone number, so as to achieve a proper restraint of the child's use of the mobile phone, thereby increasing the parent-child relationship. "Communication Method for Emergency Care Based on Indoor Positioning" can help caregivers immediately know that the care recipient has had an emergency and must be rescued immediately through the communication device, so that caregivers can know the location of the care recipient immediately and therefore reduce misjudgments. "Integrated Virtual Reality Rehabilitation Device" is a set of rehabilitation exoskeleton system that can be connected to VR (virtual reality), using games to perform rehabilitation training at the same time, bringing better rehabilitation for long-term and highly repetitive rehabilitation experience. After the game is over, the number and correct rate of patients' rehabilitation will be recorded in the system to help physicians and occupational therapists understand the patient's rehabilitation status.

In addition, the "Future Science and Technology Section," jointly established by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Academia Sinica, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Health and Welfare, called up the participation of various colleges and universities and R&D institutions, with more than 600 technical teams to participate in it. Experts in various fields came to conduct the reviews and discussions through inter-ministerial meetings, and they finally selected 71 teams as winners. STUST is the only selected private university of science and technology. It was not easy to receive an award in the competition. It was the greatest affirmation of the research and development achievements of STUST. This time, the work selected was "Smart Head Skin Quality Test System" by Prof. Wan-Rong Chang of the Department of Electronic Engineering. In addition to having published two international journals, his research work has also won many domestic competition awards. In addition, it has derived a technology transfer fund of NT$ 1 million, an industry and education project of more than NT$ 2.5, and an invention patent. In particular, the Ministry of Science and Technology invited Prof. Yu-Chong Chiu from the Department of Electronic Engineering to participate in the demonstration of the "Optical Gas Trace Concentration Detection Device."

President Deng-Maw Lu of STUST stated that STUST has positioned itself as "the university of science and technology as the best partner for industries and internationalization," striving to develop towards an "industrial university" through subsidies, awards, evaluations, institutional reforms—such as the promotion of patents—to encourage teachers to contact the industry and promote the industrialization of research. These results show that the R&D efforts invested by the university are highly recognized. It also means that STUST has become a leader in the research and development of private universities. In the future, the school will continue to work hard to create more R&D results with value that contributes to social causes.
