The College of Humanities and Social Sciences, STUST, held the 2021 Bilingual Education, Innovative Teaching and Assessment Conference.

STUST recently held the 2021 Bilingual Education, Innovative Teaching and Assessment Conference. Scholars were invited from various universities and colleges to share their research results and insights in the conference. Professor Liying Cheng from Queen’s University College of Education in Canada and Distinguished Researcher Nai-Shin Li of Language Training and Testing Center had two keynote speeches online. Four Invited speeches were given by Professor Hao-Ran Chen (English Department of National Taiwan Normal University), Professor Yu-Shiu Cheng (English Department of National Taiwan Normal University), Chairman Yoshiko Shimomoto (Natural Heartful Care Network in Japan), and Professor Shiao-Chin Luo (Department of Applied Japanese, National Taichung University of Science and Technology). Approximately 200 teachers and students from departments of English and Japanese gathered together to give lectures, read research papers, and join a variety of workshops.

The main concept of this conference was "Innovative Teaching and Evaluation of Bilingual Education." It consisted of five research areas: English Education and Evaluation, Bilingual Education and Education Innovation, Senior Health Care and Well-being, Teaching Innovation and Evaluation, and Japanese Language Education, in line with the national policy for the year of 2030 to turn Taiwan into a bilingual country and the cultivation of innovative teaching in higher education. In addition to the conference keynote speeches, group speeches, and workshops, the conference also included 18 papers on the theme of the conference, published professional research experience, and displayed 20 poster papers.

Professor Liying Cheng from Queen’s University College of Education in Canada shared her insight that the bilingual education found in the empirical research of the bilingual education program can improve the learning results of the second language, the first language, and other related learning subjects. Her research results provide theoretical and pedagogical contributions to bilingual education and multiple Language education. Dr. Nai-Shin Li, Distinguished Researcher of the Language Training and Testing Center, pointed out that the promotion of bilingual education policies requires learning from other countries' experience for rethinking the connotation and methods of bilingual education in accordance with the local context, culture and needs. She discussed how to construct a bilingual education model that is more suitable for Taiwan. In addition to the key speeches and group lectures, the conference also organized four workshops for different studies, covering LTTC bilingual teaching, innovative teaching practices and application of technology, USR innovative teaching and assessment, and Japanese language teaching.

Meanwhile, Crane Publishing Co., Ltd. supported and cooperated with the book display activities in the conference venue, offering all kinds of foreign language teaching, research, learning, and other latest publications for the participants to read and reference, making the conference fully academic.

Deng-Maw Lu, President of STUST, said that the conference was diverse and rich, with equal emphasis on theory and practice. The topics covered all levels of education at the same time; .this definitely benefited the participants and made them return with a rewarding experience. He gave thanks to all participants for their participation in and support of the conference and for their great responses to the issues of innovative teaching in bilingual education today. They encouraged the attending scholars to actively propose suggestions, discuss, and share their valuable experiences during the conference. It is expected that STUST will make further improvement in language teaching, research, and education, and talent cultivation.
