The STUST Cultural Heritage USR Project, together with the Tainan City Cultural Association and the Bureau of Cultural Affairs, jointly organized another handicraft program for artists and friends in order to preserve traditional craft culture

The USR planning team of the STUST recently undertook "Local Creation and Dissemination of Cultural Heritage - Fucheng vs Yuejin" project, sponsored by the Ministry of Education. Following last year's joint effort with the Tainan City Cultural Association and the Bureau of Cultural Affairs, Tainan City Government, the "Artists and Art Friends’ Cultural Assets Traditional Crafts Handmade Program" has received great and enthusiastic responses. This summer, STUST worked together again on the "2023 Art Masters and Art Friends’ Cultural Assets Traditional Crafts Handmade Program," trying to expand different traditional crafts and use them in different historical sites. A total of three traditional craft handicraft classes were launched at the scenic spot.

The content of the three traditional handicraft courses planned by the "Artists and Art Friends" this time was not only selected from the cutting, gluing and paper-pasting techniques commonly seen in alley temple activities, but also echoed the cultural heritage project team's work in the Yanshui District. The purpose of reviving the bamboo culture of Chuk Chai Street in the past was to add a bamboo weaving craft related to ordinary people's living habits. Last year the cut-and-glue craft was very popular among the public. Bing-shian Lin of "Wise Mount Art," an artist who has won many craft awards at the Tainan Art Exhibition and other crafts, was invited to serve as the instructor of the cut-and-glue course. Bing-shian Lin specially designed a new work for the course, “Productive Grapes,” allowing students to learn production; for the newly added temple cultural asset craft, Artist Guo-lin Hong, the sixth generation successor of "Sato Paper Art" who has inherited the century-old craft, was invited as a lecturer. Hong's paper-making crafts have been invited to exhibit abroad. It turned out that this small sky lantern paper-making course mainly used construction methods to make small sky lanterns, allowing students to understand what paper-making technology could be. As for the bamboo weaving technology, it has been working with the Tainan Bamboo Association, which has been working with the project saltwater team for four years and is committed to promoting bamboo technology, in which Artist Yi-lin Wang taught bamboo weaving skills and made bamboo baskets.

Following last year’s practice of learning traditional crafts at the historical sites of Chihkan Tower and the Grand Tianhou Temple, this year’s course was especially held in front of the Duiyue Gate, a national historic site and the only accessible ancient city gate in Tainan. "Shigoucheng Living Room B&B", featured by award-winning singer of Taiwanese songs, and "Wutiao Port Cultural Center," a Shennong Street stop of the USR project of cultural heritage, are old houses all over a hundred years old. It is hoped that students could travel through time and space to enjoy the joy of traditional crafts in nostalgic places. Prof. Bai-fang Shiao, the host of this program, explained that the three traditional craft courses this year was concluded successfully, receiving enthusiastic responses from the students.

President Cheng-wen Wu of STUST said that the USR project team of STUST is committed to promoting cultural assets and fulfilling the social responsibilities of the university, which is worthy of praise. He encouraged the team to conduct the 2024 Art Teachers and Art Friends’ Cultural Assets and Traditional Crafts Program for the third time to achieve social practice as well as the ultimate goal of cultural sustainability.
