STUST achieves great results again, with nine professors ranked among the world’s top 2% scientists

Stanford University in the United States announced the 2023 World's Top 2% Scientists list through Scopus's paper influence data in September this year (2024). Professors from STUST are on the list again, with a total of 9 professors selected, including 7 professors on the Lifetime Scientific Influence Ranking and 4 on the 2023 Scientific Influence Ranking. Among them, 2 teachers were on both lists. Their research fields include biomedicine, automation, energy, engineering, information and communication technology, and social sciences, once again demonstrating strong academic research strength of STUST.

Professor Yi-ren Su, Chair of the Department of Biotechnology and Food Technology, has outstanding performance in the field of biomedicine. He founded Meililing Biomedical Company, which is committed to developing anti-aging and Alzheimer's disease treatment drugs. It is an industry-university company of STUST, a model of cooperation. Chair Yi-ren Su of the Department of Biotechnology and Food Technology has served as a professor and Dean of Medicine School, National Taiwan University, Deputy Dean of the Medical School and National Cheng Kung University Hospital, Director of the Clinical Research Group, Director of the Institute of Infectious Diseases and Vaccines of the National Institutes of Health, and Professor Su also served as Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention during the SARS period, with extensive experience in the medical field, industry and government units. In 2015, he negotiated with Shionghe Company in San Diego, California, which was subsequently acquired by Youlian Company in Taiwanese related company. As STUST, Youlian Company, and Founder Yi-ren Su signed a technology transfer contract and jointly developed a new small molecule drug—TML-6—and established Meiling Biomedical Company. In 2017, it won the Price Innovation Program of the National Science Council. It has become an iconic new company derived from STUST, focusing on the development of anti-aging and Alzheimer's disease treatment drugs.

In other fields, many professors from STUST have performed well. Professor Ching-yang Zheng from the Department of Mechanical Engineering has been repeatedly selected for the Lifetime Scientific Influence Ranking and Annual Scientific Influence Ranking for many years. His main expertise is in thermodynamics and heat flow analysis. He has been an editor and reviewer of domestic and foreign professional journals for more than 83 times, and has published 64 journal articles. Professor Wen-shan Chen from the Department of Electronic Engineering is great at research on microwave antenna design for mobile devices or bridge point devices. He has published more than 50 SCI journal papers and more than 250 international and domestic seminar papers. He has implemented 19 projects based on the industry-university cooperation between the National Science Council and the Ministry of Education, along with 44 invention patents. Professor Zheng and Professor Chen have been listed in the Lifetime Scientific Influence Ranking for many years in a row, which is a great honor showing the outstanding influence of a great teacher' long-term investment in academic research.

Professor Hong-ru Lin from the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering focuses his research on smart materials, polymer materials, bionic materials, biomedical materials, etc. Professor Lin has abundant academic research and industry-university cooperation, and has won the National Science Council’s Special Outstanding Talent Award for three consecutive years. His has published 70 journal articles, 239 domestic and international seminar papers, 49 special books and technical reports, obtaining 8 invention patents and 1 new model patent and executing research and 58 industry-university cooperation projects. In addition, he has guided manufacturers in the industry-university cooperation developing hydrogel dressings, which have now entered the phrase of mass production.

Professor Da-zhong Zhu from the Department of Engineering Management has long been involved in research on fuzzy multi-criteria decision-making and fuzzy number ratios. He has received many special research project subsidies from the National Science Council and has been a reviewer for many international journals for a long time. As of July 2024, he has reviewed 243 papers. He also serves as the academic editor of the international journal PLOS ONE (SCIE/Q1) and a guest editor of the international journal Axioms (SCIE/Q1). He has published a total of 10 SCIE journal papers in the past three years. Professor Zhu has been listed on the Lifetime Scientific Influence Ranking for four consecutive years since 2021, and has been selected on the Annual Scientific Influence List for three consecutive years, showing outstanding performance.

Professor Zhen-ting Hsu from the Department of Electrical Engineering is specialized in power system analysis, power quality, microgrid planning and operation, and renewable energy power generation systems. He has implemented more than 20 National Science Council projects and more than 30 industry-university cooperation projects, and he has published more than 50 articles in domestic and foreign journals, together with more than 100 seminar papers. Currently, Professor Hsu’s main research is to help solve the impact of renewable energy power generation companies connected to the Taipower system, which will increase the proportion of renewable energy power generation in our country and effectively reduce carbon emissions. In addition, Professor Hsu is also cooperating with industries to study how to control energy storage systems and STATCOM equipment to strengthen Taipower's power grid to maintain reliable power supply quality. This issue has become even more important under the impact of extreme climate around the world.

Professor Ying-shi Gong from the Department of Electrical Engineering, whose main expertise is servo motor control and robotic arm control. During his service at STUST, he has published 39 domestic and foreign journals, 103 seminar papers, and 3 professional publications. Professor Gong not only focuses on academic research, but also cooperates very closely with industry. He has implemented 43 National Science Council and industry-university cooperation projects. He has both academic research and industrial practical capabilities, laying a solid foundation for the cultivation of diverse talents in our school.

Distinguished Professor Yong-ming Huang and Chair of the Department of the Multimedia and Entertainment Science, selected by the Annual Scientific Influence List, won the Mr. Da-you Wu Memorial Award of the National Science Council in 2018. Professor Huang is an outstanding alumnus of STUST and has returned to the STUST to teach with a bright future. His main expertise is educational games, digital learning, and path analysis, and he is very dedicated in teaching and research. So far, he has published 31 journal papers and 19 seminar papers, guided students to participate in competitions, and won many awards. He has indeed set a good example for the students of STUST.

According to a survey conducted by Global Vision Magazine on mutual evaluation of high-performing universities presidents, STUST has had outstanding performance in the fields of Information and Communication Technology and Engineering, Manufacturing and Construction, with a ranking among the top 20. President De-guang Zhou said that STUST has long been very attentive in investment in research equipment, creation of teaching environment and teacher growth. It encourages teachers to cooperate across fields, strengthens the integration of industry, academia and research, and continues to invest more resources in innovative research. With the addition and growth of new outstanding scholars, STUST looks forward to more professors joining the list in the future, demonstrates the university's outstanding contribution to international academics and strong research capabilities.

Acting President De-guang Zhou, said that the fact that many professors are ranked among the top 2% of scientists in the world fully demonstrates the outstanding achievements of STUST in academic research.
